Neuroscientist Usha Goswami, chair of the 2023 judging panel, explains why it is important to get children excited about science via books, and introduces us to the fabulous titles that made this year’s shortlist. I went after lunch on a January afternoon and it was just too crowded to appreciate it fully and this is in the off season so I can’t imagine what it is like when Venice is full of tourists. Rather crowded inside, however, and they do tend to push you through if you are taking photos outside at the back (on the pile of books) or outside at the side. In the 19th century, he is trying out an idea which is a proto-socialist, anti-industrialist diatribe.

Take the porphyry sculpture of the Tetrarchs, brought back from Constantinople, probably in the Second Crusade, and embedded into San Marco—as are all sorts of panels and discs of porphyry and other precious stones. The word 'Arsenal' which was the name for the Venetian shipyard which used assembly-line techniques (celebrated by Dante in the Inferno) to produce, at peak, a fighting galley every day, comes from the arabic 'dar es sinaa' which means 'house of art'. The absolute other end of paintings to go and see would be the Carpaccios in the Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni, which is behind San Marco. The sense of stepping elegantly back in time was as complete as it could be within the very contemporary format of the digital audiobook.

A quirky but richly detailed portrait of Venice in all its history and visual splendour by an English woman who has lived there. which is all that would excuse some unfortunate racial references that are unacceptable at the date of later revisions. I didn’t choose Death in Venice because it’s too jolly obvious, but there are all sorts of miserable books out there. It’s a book that says Venice is not just a beautiful playbox, it’s also a crucible of ideas that have had a massive effect on Northern European culture and social life.

It touches on that period, and some of the issues around social mobility and the concentration of power and, also, the feeling of an empire. It is a pleasant enough read, but its main fault for me is that Morris wants to seem to tell you everything about every aspect of Venice. Not your typical travel guide but more like meandering through Venice with a good and interesting friend. Another very good book I read was about two men who want to be members of the Venetian aristocracy, Venice’s Intimate Empire by Erin Maglaque. It’s a bit of history that’s probably less well handled in most guidebooks because it’s quite complicated, but it has quite an effect on what the city looks like.

It’s a whole series of Empire rooms and big staircases, charmless but grand and with wonderful things inside. Although the recent level of prominence of the carnival and its masks for tourism are apparently a fairly recent innovation). The church itself is fine on the inside, and is free so worth stopping by if you are in the area, it just doesn't stand out compared to the other churches in the city. That said, I learned a lot about Venice history - the kind of stuff you definitely don't get from a history book.

The presenter's joke against a Scotsman - with an accent reminiscent of Fraser from Dad's Army - for raising the expense of motorboats made even the radio show seem like an artefact from former times. Sorry for cluttering the list with her books, but she really WAS one of the first authors who came to my mind for books with Venice as a setting! The chapter setup doesn't necessarily flow, and it took me a good half of the book to get into the writing style--or maybe the second half of the book, and especially the last few chapters, was just more interesting.

I am glad I read it but if you just want an overview before a 3-day visit, this book is not for you. Sex reassignment surgeon Georges Burou did the surgery, since doctors in Britain refused to allow the procedure unless Morris and Tuckniss divorced, something Morris was not prepared to do at the time.I thought it was a travel book but no the author detests those and classes this as ' travel literature'. has for nine centuries consistently exuded a liquid Holy Manna of such purity as to be indistinguishable from the purest spring water.
