I’m caught in a repeating cycle with this series where each volume starts off slow and I wonder why I keep reading and then some interesting stuff happens near then end and I determine I’m too involved to quit now. At the castle, Canute sends Thorkell to drink with the other commanders while he goes to confront the king, flanked by Askeladd and Thorfinn.

Conversely, Thorfinn becomes an adult in the second story arc, but he shaves his beard, as Yukimura did not want him to look strong. It is a true testament of a book's writing and characters when it has you tear up at a character's burdens being lifted, and you feel relief for that character. The whole picture of the story is more complex and well made than expected, with a bigger scope on events than you could think of at a first glance, with a lot of surprises at hand.

Thorkell explains that he and Thors were commanders of the Jomsvikings and their leader Sigvaldi, who was Thorkell older brother, gave him one of his daughters, Helga. Based on some older references (and the anime) I wasn't sure how accurate it would be, but I should have given Yukimura more credit. After the battle, in which Askeladd and his men revel in the treasures, a sixteen-year-old Viking boy named Thorfinn delivers the head of the French leader to Askeladd and in exchange, Thorfinn would get the chance to avenge his father’s death in a duel with Askeladd.On the journey, he has amassed scars, losses, and sins to atone for, but also found strength in his friends, in his new wife, and in the dream that he's never let go, of a new land free of brutality and slavery. Structurally the way story is set it has more impact with a major event at the end of the story rather than at the beginning. Criticism was, however, levelled at the extent of suspension of disbelief in a historical fiction series. I'd say that's okay if the book continues to be a solid palate cleanser between wacky DC and Marvel comics. Well you learn that in the 2nd half with much more background on how Thorfinn became a part of the vikings in a sad yet hopeful tale of childhood.
