Despite the lack of structure and in spite of her parents’ indifference—and even obstruction—to her education, Sue persists. A major aspect of this work involves the use of an innovative eight-legged, self-contained walking jack-up barge, known as a ‘Wavewalker’. In the Treasury I was lucky enough to meet my future husband, Jeremy Heywood, who went on to serve four UK Prime Ministers in various roles including Principal Private Secretary, Permanent Secretary of 10 Downing Street, Cabinet Secretary and the Head of the Civil Service. I wouldn’t bring this out onto fast-moving or choppy water, and I’d use an actual pedal kayak if I wanted to do some serious kayaking.

Suzanne’s account was of a frankly abusive childhood where her needs were pretty much always at the bottom of the list of priorities.
