Description

The past two decades have led to a sense of contentment, along with a confrontation with depression, to take the main stage in If I Don’t Know, Family Values, and Anecdotal Evidence. She has written and edited numerous poetry volumes and anthologies for both adults and children, and was shortlisted for the 2001 Whitbread Poetry Book of the Year for If I Don't Know. Strugnell’s version of a poetic voice is used to mix the elevated with the everyday and the outcome is comic.

Serious Concerns by Wendy Cope | Goodreads Serious Concerns by Wendy Cope | Goodreads

Cope has written in a variety of established traditional verse forms, and here she uses the triolet, an eight-line poem with a rhyme scheme of abaaabab. The beauty of the poem is in its touching simplicity, and the faint hint of the absurd suggested by that huge orange. However, Cope herself disagrees with the concept of a "Wendy Cope anthem", and doesn't believe her poetry could be categorized in this way. Four collections of her adult poetry have been published, Making Cocoa for Kingsley Amis in 1986, Serious Concerns in 1992, If I Don't Know in 2001, and Family Values in 2011.We understand that not everyone can donate right now, but if you can afford to contribute, we promise it will be put to good use. The tone, however, is light-hearted, and the character of the subject, her warmth and friendliness, comes over vividly to the reader. Wendy Cope was educated at Farringtons School, Chislehurst, London and then, after finishing university at St Hilda's College, Oxford, she worked for 15 years as a primary school teacher in London.

Despite her slight output, her books have sold well and she has attracted a popular following with her lighthearted, often comical poetry, as well as achieving literary credibility winning two awards and making an award shortlist over a fourteen-year period.Since then she has published two further books of poetry and has edited various anthologies of comic verse. In 1998 she was the BBC Radio 4 listeners' choice to succeed Ted Hughes as Poet Laureate and when Andrew Motion's term of office ended in 2009 she was once again considered as a replacement. And although she is known for writing about the everyday, she has also occasionally engaged with more momentous events.

Cope taught in primary schools for many years before publishing her first book of poetry, Making Cocoa for Kingsley Amis (1986). Her habitual stance is the sly one, less modest than might appear at first sight, of marginal annotator, ruthlessly mocking literary pretensions and absurdities. For some reason the one that always sticks in my head from this collection is ‘Kindness to Animals’, a poem she wrote for a fund-raising anthology produced by the World Wide Fund for Nature.
