I loved the premise of this book and the author was very successful in conveying the angst and lack of decisiveness of his principal character. She goes to Rome to help with the sale of a convent, or more accurately to help find a way to prevent a sale, and while there she falls in love with the convent. She makes a big scene of rushing up on stage and kissing him during a play at the end of their senior year of college. I didn't like the main character, found many scenes unbelievable, and the amount of times the word "said" was used in dialogue scenes was entirely distracting.

My conclusion: it has a lot of the puzzle pieces of a good novel, but they just didn't fit together. We're told that Claire is successful and beautiful (despite the fact that she doesn't wear makeup or care about clothes - I hate that trope), and yet she seems to not really have a personality and can't seem to make up her mind. It's a look at faith and at all forms of love - romantic, familial and between friends - enjoyable and beautifully written. Kenneth Dorne are depicted with relish and distaste as 'la dolce vita' at its most worthless, and given short shrift by Roderick Alleyn. However, the characters are not convincing to me and the frequent switching of timelines became a wee bit burdensome.
