I loved the premise of this book and the author was very successful in conveying the angst and lack of decisiveness of his principal character. She goes to Rome to help with the sale of a convent, or more accurately to help find a way to prevent a sale, and while there she falls in love with the convent. She makes a big scene of rushing up on stage and kissing him during a play at the end of their senior year of college. I didn't like the main character, found many scenes unbelievable, and the amount of times the word "said" was used in dialogue scenes was entirely distracting.

I’m a two-time Grammy winner and I have a signed contract for ninety million dollars with the top record label in the business, so I shouldn’t be crying. got old around page 60 - I honestly thought I had read more only to discover I wasn't even halfway thru the book. Noah’s house is so far from town, that he doesn’t have cell service, nor does he have internet at his house.

She starts to consider taking vows and joining the convent but neither her best friend nor her daughter understand her reasoning and the appearance in Rome of her close friend, Marcus, complicates her thought process as it opens the door to the possibility of a middle-age love as well. Readers probably know that there is something to be said for finding the right read for the right time or mood. Perhaps it is the bias of being married to a Marcus myself, but I found no suspense in Claire's choice between taking religious vows vs. I sat silent as Susan talked and talked, her long, slender, perfectly manicured finger scrolling endlessly across an iPad screen full of schedule notes.

When In Rome By Sarah Adams |The Works

My conclusion: it has a lot of the puzzle pieces of a good novel, but they just didn't fit together. We're told that Claire is successful and beautiful (despite the fact that she doesn't wear makeup or care about clothes - I hate that trope), and yet she seems to not really have a personality and can't seem to make up her mind. I think we’ll get hurt a lot in this life, but maybe it’s worth it because sometimes we will experience really amazing things, too. I requested this because I was intrigued by the setting--I have a lot of fond memories of Rome--and because the premise of Claire hanging out with three nuns in a convent to figure out her relationship to religion feels unique.I rub the dashboard like there might be a hidden genie inside waiting to pop out and grant me three wishes. It's a look at faith and at all forms of love - romantic, familial and between friends - enjoyable and beautifully written. Kenneth Dorne are depicted with relish and distaste as 'la dolce vita' at its most worthless, and given short shrift by Roderick Alleyn. Book clubs will go wild for Claire’s new mission, shaped by a series of events propelled by nuns, the restorative beauty of the Eternal City and the urgency that comes from the determination to live life before it’s over. The vase, the dancers, I don't even know where's that from, I"m guessing grece but I"m not even sure.

When in Rome Series by Sarah Adams - Goodreads

Which reminds me, I have long had his All Saints on my shelves, which I picked up at the incomparable and unmissable Renaissance Books at the Milwaukee airport. Almost every day of the last three months has been dedicated to learning the concert choreography, stage blocking, solidifying the set list, rigorous exercise, and rehearsing the songs, all while smiling and pretending that inside I didn’t feel like a rotting compost pile. Positive messages include believing in the importance of love, putting personal relationships first, and trusting that not every relationship will end just because you've been hurt before or are the child of divorced parents. However, her daughter, best friend, and the love of her life have thoughts about Claire joining a religious community thousands of miles away in Italy. I haven't practiced Catholicism in a minute, but that is (or at least used to be) a pretty big deal. Once in Rome, she finds a group of funny, fearless nuns in a gorgeous villa, beautiful runs throughout a color-saturated city, and a chance to reflect. However, the characters are not convincing to me and the frequent switching of timelines became a wee bit burdensome. Deep in the recesses of Claire's mind is her desire to become a religious sister that compelled her as a teenager.

I happily followed her through the winding streets of Rome, and I’d go anywhere else she’d care to take me.As a teenager and college student she had planned to become a nun, and she's wondering if the time has come for her to make that committment. When in Rome is a detective novel by Ngaio Marsh; it is the twenty-sixth novel to feature Roderick Alleyn, and was first published in 1970. When Noah Walker finds Amelia on his front lawn in her broken-down car, he makes it clear he doesn’t have the time or patience for celebrity problems. Claire at middle age, is at a crossroads as she faces the despair of her lost dreams and the hope that there’s still time to find happiness. com (on swimming and flying), Slate, the New York Times Book Review, the Times op-ed page, the Washington Post Magazine, San Francisco Chronicle, Forbes FYI, Good Housekeeping, Parents, Milwaukee Magazine and elsewhere.
