I also have three other published novels, all psychological thrillers with a contemporary edge, under the name Beverley Jones. Brilliant descriptions of the vivid U S wilderness/New York, the weird, larger than life characters and especially Olivia who was amazing but not in a good way!

This book on survival will also help you choose essential gear, with checklists for personal and group gear. This isn’t so much a revenge story about a wronged woman as an exploration of the damage that betrayal and lies can cause to an individual and a relationship, as Liv questions what she thought was her happy marriage and tries to determine if one mistake should wipe out a committed partnership. As a sustainable travel enthusiast from Luxembourg, I am the happiest while doing outdoorsy stuff like hiking, cycling, or sailing. There’s also stories of conservation efforts, especially in regards to Temagami and the old growth forest of Wolf Lake. He argues that when a wolf ‘wanders into a flock of sheep and kills 20 or 30 of them in apparent compulsion’, it is not so much ‘slaughter as a failure on the part of the sheep to communicate anything at all—resistance, mutual respect, appropriateness—to the wolf’. Breakfast, trail meals, sweet and savory snacks, dinners, appetizers, side dishes, desserts, even refreshing camp drinks, you can find all this and more in this best survival book. But through Wilderness I re-lived magical holidays from years past when I visited Monument Valley, Grand Canyon and Yosemite. In The New Wilderness, Diane Cook’s Booker prize-longlisted debut novel, the end isn’t so much “nigh” as “come and gone”.

You’ll be fascinated by her descriptions of attending dog sledding school, panic when she gets trapped in snow, fear for her as she navigates empty tundra at night. Her wild girl observations and lack of inhibition can be at once humorous and lightly menacing, as when the plump legs of a woman freshly arrived from the City make her hungry.

Mercurial and increasingly desperate to protect Agnes, Bea is destined to become their leader, attaining a quasi-folk-hero status. However, a few months later Firebird Films - the company who picked up the book - invited me to London to a chat about it, at which point they pulled out an already completed script and told me they had financial backers who were raring to go.
