Right behind the apple note is orange, which comes off a little more orange tic-tac than natural orange. oz caramel sauce (any type but I make my own bourbon caramel sauce (See Notes for URL) and it was perfect! It combines Jack Daniels with cider and spices and is especially delicious in a Winter Jack Warmer with half and half. Neat, Jack Daniel’s Winter Jack Tennessee Cider tastes like a glass of watery whiskey liqueur which was served with ice, sat, diluted, and warmed to room temperature – not something very pleasant. The entry for the Winter Jack is very thin, with the aromas from the nose muted on the palate with apple, orange, and cinnamon.

This time around Jack Daniels has decided to go the cider flavored whiskey route, very much in the same way that Jim Beam has with their Red Stag Hardcore Cider. So since I was low on the required ingredients I made these swaps… Used Carmel macchiato coffee creamer, warmed it up in a saucepan. The reasoning behind the low proof seems to be the idea that Winter Jack is “Best Served Warm,” a suggestion made clearly on the bottle and perhaps the only way Winter Jack can be really enjoyed. I guess the one disadvantage to all the kiddos around me is that I pick up all their germs even if they don’t get sick. It’s really at the end of the midpalate that we get any sense that this is a flavored whiskey, but the notes are so faint that they are fleeting, and by the time the short finish ends, they’ve vanished. If it’s impossible to find, make your own blend with a bottle of Jack Daniels bourbon and some apple cider with a bit of cinnamon. When you have an inventory of hundreds of bottle of booze and you get one as a gift, it’s easy to be a bit meh about it if you can imagine. On the palate Winter Jack does taste a lot like warm spiced apple cider, the mouth feel thickens up a bit, and the base whiskey does peek through. I’m actually the one who has been a bit meh this week; one side of my throat is on fire and little things like swallowing have been a pain.Warmed, the Winter Jack’s nose does spice up a bit with orange, cinnamon, and clove standing out as much as the apple.

We can understand the idea of a spirit you can enjoy warmed for the holidays, but a much better way at going about that would be to heat a glass of cider and then pour some Jack Daniels into it. If you do decide to take the plunge with Jack Daniel’s Winter Jack Tennessee Cider, drink it warmed – any other way is a wholly unpleasant experience. I’ve had more colds and sore throats in the three years since I moved here than I had in a dozen years! I warmed the half and half and caramel sauce first and then when I thought it was just right, I poured in the Winter Jack and heated the Winter Jack Warmer cocktail for just a few seconds more.Jack Daniels has had phenomenal success with their Tennessee Honey, so it’s no surprise to see them revisit the liqueur space with another offering. You end up with more real apple flavor along with the core whiskey notes that leap from the glass when heated.

Given we are starting with such a low amount of alcohol, the end result after 30-40 seconds of microwaving is even less alcohol (and that’s what you’re paying for! The folks at Jack Daniels sent this to me as a holiday gift and I opened it on the day of the first snow in Denver. Jack Daniels really hit a home run with their Tennessee Honey product, bringing the core Jack Daniels flavor profile to a sweet honey liqueur. On the label, Jack Daniel’s recommends putting 5 ounces of Winter Jack into a microwave safe glass to “heat and enjoy.It’s got a relatively low alcohol content so while it should be served warm I was careful once it was added. As it was, I finished this post and then headed straight to my warm, cozy bed with this cocktail in hand and I’m tempted to also wear this adorable hat.
