Maher, John (October 13, 2020). "NYRB Revisits Two Big Books by William Gaddis". www.publishersweekly.com. Publishers Weekly . Retrieved November 19, 2020.

Three other characters besides Wyatt seek the truth in the novel: Esme, the poet; Stanley, the composer; and Valentine, the art critic. They warrant the reader’s attention because they discover truth. Steven Moore's excellent Reader's Guide, with its useful annotations to the text, is highly recommended (and available online, in its entirety, for free -- kudos to all involved in that undertaking). The story's very ambiguity steadily feeds its mysteriousness and power, and Danielewski's mastery of postmodernist and cinema-derived rhetoric up the ante continuously, and stunningly. One of the most impressive excursions into the supernatural in many a year. Like a Flemish master Gaddis paints his scenes nicely, with a loving attention to subtle detail: skip a sentence and one may have missed a vital piece (or clever aside). Another thing that I read was that the book was not well received at first, but then it started getting accolades later on because of its complexity and difficulty to read. I am not sure why that is a good thing, but it was enough for it to become a staple on many "must read before you die" lists.

He is creating anew, and as though he were a painter from those times: "I'm a master painter in the Guild, in Flanders," he claims, not a modern reproductionist. a b Koenig, Peter William (1975). He invited me there, in fact, to see the mummy. He had made one himself for me! Oh, but with such ingenuity, it was really a masterpiece… There is nature- A customary meeting that takes place between sun and moon to greet a new dawn and dusk is an essential and my most favorite part of this book. I have never read any writer who embraced nature so intimately and unifies it effortlessly with the emotional upheavals experienced by mankind. The lust of summer gone, the sun made its visits shorter and more uncertain, appearing to the city with that discomfited reserve, that sense of duty of the lover who no longer loves. Wherever Gaddis took me, he offered the sublime company of warm rays and bright moonlight and during the instances of foggy days; I relished the unusual beauty of a silent landscape. I walked. See the face on the book cover? That is my face now as I finish this book. That was my face every step of the way. The old Aunt May who raises him is a hard woman, yet oh, she breaks one's heart too, "when she made things, even her baking, she kept the blinds closed in the butler's pantry when she frosted a cake, nobody ever saw anything of hers until it was done".
