The ACS has issued a Diversity and Equality Statement setting out clearly its objective of seeking to appeal to people with an interest in every form of the game. It took some time to dawn that he was as good as he was, or such an excellent man. His appearance, I think, had something to do with this. To see him emerging from the pavilion in The Parks, as an outwardly gauche and gangling undergraduate, and to watch him taking guard, face screwed up behind those rimless spectacles, was not a convincing introduction.

Though I only saw him on the TV, Shane Warne was a real joy to watch. He kept you interested all the time. He was perhaps the finest slow bowler the game has ever seen. Playing his 50 Tests over a 14 years. period reflected the fact that he played during an era when England produced a lot of high class batsmen. Captaining England in half of his Tests may have reduced his batting ability. However, he still scored 3 Test centuries, with a best of 121 and 11 fifties averaging 31.63. He also held 53 catches.

Andy Lloyd 1988-1992

This is a trial, and will be reviewed in a few months to see whether there is a demand for the service and how smoothly it works. 25 September 2021 I was fortunate to play with and under him. He was a fantastic player for both the Bears and England. He Became my Chairman when I was CEO and was always very supportive; we were a fantastic partnership together and helped the Bears win 11 trophies in 12 years. Snow recollected in his autobiography: “I can remember a call between them in 1964 going something like ‘No A.C.’ — ‘Yes, Mike’ — ‘Wait A.C.’ — ‘Damn it, Mike’ — ‘Sorry A.C.’” It was not amusing for the Smiths, but it had fielders in splits at times.

The 1964-65 South Africa tour was my most memorable series because as it was successful for the team and I did well too. It was followed by an online event celebrating the life of Peter Wynne-Thomas, our esteemed former Honorary Secretary, who died in July after a short illness. Representatives of Nottinghamshire CCC as well as ACS members shared their memories of Peter and paid tribute to his work.
