Description

As part of DK's award-winning Big Ideas Simply Explained series, The Literature Book uses infographics and images to explain key ideas and themes. Biographies of important authors offer insight into their lives and other writings, and a section on Further Reading details more than 150 additional works to explore. There was a solid effort made to present a diverse array of works outside of the classical European variety—inclusive of cultural sub-genres such as Sanskrit Epics, Imperial Chinese Poetry, Early Arabic Lit, Slave Narratives, Inianismo, Baihua Lit, The Harlem Renaissance, The Latin American Boom, Caribbean, and Indian English.

This reader-friendly introduction to the world of Mathematics is a joy to peruse. D K Publishing has provided a colourful, informative product which is quite extensive in its range: from its beginnings (Ancient and Classical Periods, 6000 BCE–500 CE); the Middle Ages (500–1500); the Renaissance 1500–1680); the Enlightenment (1680–1800); the 19th Century (1800–1900); and Modern Mathematics (1900–Present). But, in general, about the books and authors that they do appear, I learned a lot, so definitely, it is the best reference book I have read this year (2018).Sociology. It's yet one of those subjects from the department of social sciences that most of us are interested in learning, but only have a vague idea of what it is about. Simply put, it's a study of societies, and how they change over time. Since its earliest influences in the 15th century, the ideas and concepts of what or how a society functions have changed many times over generations, and this book chronicles these ideas as well as the proponents and thinkers of these ideas.

It reads like a reference book simply because it IS a reference book. It is by no means a full and complete list of every single film that changed cinema, but it is pretty darn close. It is notoriously inadequate to take an adopted child into one's home and love him - Donald Winnicott The Literature Book is a fascinating journey through the greatest works of world literature, from the Iliad to Don Quixote to The Great Gatsby. Around 100 crystal-clear articles explore landmark novels, short stories, plays, and poetry that reinvented the art of writing in their time, whether Ancient Greece, post-classical Europe, or modern-day Korea. Though social groups — or societies — are made up of individual people, sociology is the study of the group rather than of the individual. This book improved my scope of the history of philosophical ideas. Often the chapters were too brief for my taste, but essential concepts were explained as clearly as possible. The authors tried to give a fair account of all, as far as I can assess this with my limited philosophical knowledge.

It follows a systematic chronological and thematic approach, drawing the big lines in the development of storytelling, adding reference points, memorable quotes, short biographical information boxes and meaningful illustrations.I am a fan, generally, of DK Publishing’s efforts. They can meld text and amazing graphics with the greatest of ease. I have read many of their efforts from travel guides to more technical subjects. I have just recently started into their The Big Ideas Simply Explained series. Although I sure will use it to at least watch 5 movies (since it’s written by a movie-journalist above all) the only reason I intended to read it is because I am bewildered by the movie industry and the way they produce films and all that effects and stuff. A] great refresher for films you haven't seen in a while and an even better resource for populating your watchlist with shows you may have missed." - GeekDad

From beginning to end, it makes some of the greatest movies we all know better while also bringing to mind some films you may not have heard of. On the other hand there are movies out there which I was never interested in, and Leigh writes them up, summarizing them succinctly, which made me raise an eyebrow in curiosity. Sociologists use the tools and methods of science to understand how and why humans behave the way they do when they interact together in groups.

Success!

I really enjoyed this book. It's simplicity is the key to it.I would recommend it to people with at least a passing interest in psychology.I also want to get others in the series. The Movie Book is magnificent on quite a few accounts, one of which would be the fact that it has very solid approach and when you read it, you learn about classics from America, Europe, Asia – old Boy comes to mind now and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance – and directors, writers and actors that that belong to the Cinematic Olympus are presented with their most important achievements, chronologically listed, the revolutionary style is exposed, main features of the films are highlighted with some of the crucial quotes and the minute when something special is happening in the feature…well, one of the special, since we are talking about landmarks all that takes place there is ‘special’ The timelines at each chapter/philosopher were very helpful in connecting the dots. Even though I've read about (the ideas of) some philosophers in the past (eg. Hegel, Feuerbach and Marx), I know understand that you can better understand Marx's work when you know - understand is another thing - Hegel and Feuerbach. And Adam Smith of course. The same with the influence of Plato and Aristotle on the development of Christianity for another example. text and bold graphics to chart the development of maths through history, the book explores and explains some of the most complex and fascinating mathematical subjects. Delve into everything from the mathematical ideas and inventions of the ancient world such as the first number systems, magic squares, and the Chinese abacus, through to the developments in mathematics during medieval and Renaissance Europe, to the rise of group theory and cryptography more recently. The formatting of how it should be read, if you've read manga comics I think you would know what I mean although I wasn't sure why it confused me .
