Ralph Bellamy as James Morse, owner of Morse Industries, a troubled shipbuilding company Edward plans to take over Pretty Woman". Rotten Tomatoes. Archived from the original on January 2, 2013 . Retrieved November 20, 2023. SOUND: "Pretty Woman" is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1. The audio presentation seemed like a bare basic edition of a "comedy mix". The audio is spread mildly across the front speakers, but doesn't have much in the way of oomph behind the music. There's not much detail to the presentation, and audio quality is just average, with somewhat thin-sounding dialogue. a b "Pretty Woman". Turner Classic Movies. All this sounds awful, I know, but once Marshall takes us out into the California daylight, things markedly improve. The Rodeo Drive montage is crisp and clear, with bright, vivid colors that really show off the hues and textures of Vivian's new wardrobe. Grass is lushly green as well, and when Vivian and her roommate Kit meet by the hotel pool, the clarity and richness of the close-ups are lovely. The final scene on the tenement fire escape also looks quite good, but can't quite erase from my mind the litany of previous problem issues. a b "Pretty Woman (1990)". Box Office Mojo. VIDEO: "Pretty Woman" is presented by Touchstone in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen on this release, an improvement over the prior release's non-anamorphic effort. Sharpness and detail aren't remarkable in any way, but the definition level at least appeared consistent and pleasing. Script was developed at the Sundance Film Institute. According to the July 1991 "Esquire," Robert Garland, Stephen Metcalfe, and Barbara Benedek all contributed to the development of the screenplay. Earlier versions of the screenplay were more downbeat and realistic, emphasizing the darker side of the relationships. Director Garry Marshall is often credited with turning the film into a more romantic, upbeat fairy tale. Music Video (SD, 4 minutes) - Natalie Cole probably cringes with embarrassment whenever she sees this oh-so-'80s video of Wild Women Do. The song works better in the film than it does on its own, but the video is an amusing historical relic. Though inspired by such films as Wall Street and The Last Detail, [5] the film bears a resemblance to Pygmalion myths: particularly George Bernard Shaw's play of the same name, which also formed the basis for the Broadway musical My Fair Lady. It was Walt Disney Studios then-president Jeffrey Katzenberg who insisted the film be re-written as a modern-day fairy tale and love story, as opposed to the original dark drama. It was pitched to Touchstone Pictures and re-written as a romantic comedy. [6] The title 3000 was changed because Disney executives thought it sounded like a title for a science fiction film. This is an amazingly lightweight little tale of a hooker and a hunk, and how the approval of one yields the dissolution of the other. Can a high society bachelor turn a hooker into a housewife? Well, in the movies he sure can ... especially if the prostitute in question looks even half as flawless as Julia Roberts.

The following day, Edward takes Vivienne to the polo. While Vivienne chats to David Morse, the grandson of the man involved in Edward's latest deal, Philip is worried she is a spy. Edward reassures him by telling him how they met, and Philip then comes on to Vivienne. When they return to the hotel, she is furious with Edward for telling him, and plans to leave, but he persuades her to see out the week. Edward leaves work early the next day and takes Vivienne on a date to the Opera in his private jet. She clearly is moved by the music, and says "If I forget to tell you later, I had a wonderful time tonight". On returning to the hotel, he falls asleep (the first time we have seen this) while she is getting ready for bed, and she kisses him on the lips - she doesn't do this with clients - and they make love as partners, rather than client and hooker. Over breakfast, Edward offers to put her up in an apartment so he can continue seeing her, but she feels insulted and says this is not the fairytale she wants. He then goes off to work without resolving the situation. Kit comes to the hotel and sees that she has fallen for him, but she denies it. Burton, Lynsi (March 18, 2015).
