Six Years by Harlan Coben: 9780451414113 - Penguin Random House

Misfortune however strikes their trip, as Elizabeth is abducted, murdered, and her body dumped in a ditch. Although her killers were caught and brought to book, for David, there could possibly be no closure. So when he runs into the stranger—whose motives are unclear and information is irrefutable—it turns his life upside down. No sooner does he confront his wife, Corinne, about the devastating secret he learns, than his mirage of a perfect life disappears as though it never existed. Coben, Harlan (November 5, 2009). "Chris Christie Confidential". The New York Times . Retrieved October 29, 2015. I realized I actually missed this-reading a plain ole mystery thriller like I used to in the good old days when the only authors I knew were James Patterson, Dan Brown, John Grisham and David Baldacci. Add in Jude Deveraux and Danielle Steel even though these last two are romance writers. Lol. Mr. Coben’s style though is up-to-date. He has certainly kept up with the times because his narrative is relatable, believable (with the exception of that part where the hero dials certain phone numbers by heart-lol!) and hilarious. Take a peek.to the mystery, not the subplot? - 30% Special suspect? - lover Murder of certain profession? - criminals Kind of investigator - skilled citizen investigator Kid or adult book? - Adult or Young Adult Book I like Mr. Coben’s books especially his stand-alones. This is in part because, in some ways, he and I live in the same world. We’re both in our early 50’s, white, married to physicians, graduates of well-known colleges, parents of four kids, and, yes, privileged. The characters in his books have decidedly first-world problems; the bad things that happen to his characters are often extreme versions of things I fret about: the safety of teenagers, the dangers internet exposure can bring, the secrets that splinter seemingly secure relationships. His books espouse the view that life’s greatest rewards are found in connections with others, especially those forged with old friends and family. This works for me. The other problem with the love story is that the reader only apprehends Natalie through Jake’s narration. She’s an object rather than a participant. This distancing view of her makes it impossible to understand her. We know Jake will do anything to be with her but we never know her. It’s easy to quibble with the novel’s romantic elements. Mr. Coben didn’t set out to write a romance; he set out to write a damn good thriller. This novel was no exception. Jake Fisher, a young handsome college Professor, has never recovered from losing Natalie, the love of his life six years ago when she inexplicably dumped him after a perfect summer romance and promptly married an old flame. Since then he has had a few short term relationships but no one has been able to come close to replacing Natalie. He loves his teaching job at his small East coast college and is popular with the students and has a good drinking buddy amongst the staff. However, one day he sees something that makes him wonder what really happened with Natalie and as he starts to look into past events, gets himself and a lot of other people into a whole world of trouble.
