If he is saved in Greenpath, Zote shows up in Dirtmouth, where he once again talks to the Knight in an arrogant fashion. Our main character Alex ends up being, you guessed it, the fool. This disrupts his plans of attending wizard school and taking care of his younger sister after their parents died in a tragic fire four years ago. History shows previous fools tend to die or become maimed nearly every time, so Alex decides to dodge the draft and escape to wizard school instead. Joining him on his escape are his female childhood friend who is a ranger type, his younger sister who seems to roleplay as a wet blanket that just shouts his name over and over while crying anytime anything happens, and his childhood friend's 3-headed cerberus legendary dog.

Pain shot through his side; the Mark’s interference rose, breaking his concentration for an instant when a bone spike scraped along his torso. What could have been an intriguing series opener turned out to be an average outing because of uneven pacing and some unnecessary chapters Anyway, I think I'll wait for an in depth review before grabbing the second book, slated for January 2023, I think. As it passed, Alex spied what he was looking for: two guardsmen sitting on the side of the fountain. They were bleary-eyed from the night watch, and squinted at Alex as he strolled up as light-footed as a pleased cat. I enjoyed the book, but i've grown very pessimistic about books that originate on Royal Road. Almost every other series i've read from Royal Road has started out ok but then devolves into a platform for liberals to push their agenda instead of a fun story to read during down time. After his parents died, Alex Roth had one desire: become a wizard. Through hard work, he was accepted into the University of Generasi, the world’s greatest academy of wizardry... The author is clearly talented. The writing, dialogue and ideas are all good. But the pacing after they reach the wizard school is terrible to an extend that almost made me dnf. Following our MC get stronger and better the same way (hard work and a cheat sheet called the Mark) is just boring. All of the characters are robots that just work, work, work. There are no stakes since the Mark will make sure that the MC will overcome everything and, unsurprisingly, a universty and perfect recall is a perfect match. Boring. So far it's a decent series though the male MC is being portrayed (yet again) as a blundering incompetent fool, and the female he likes is strong, intelligent, and confident (never wrong about anything). Maybe he grows out of it in the second book, but in the first book he repeatedly screams in terror at things the the female MC shrugs off (in fact, everyone but him reacts better), and it's hard to relate to someone so cowardly.

Zote is a traveller from outside Hallownest who came to the Kingdom to fulfill a promise. This is ultimately revealed to be a promise of glory for himself. He named his nail "Life Ender" because names supposedly have power. Unfortunately, because it is made of shellwood, it cannot deal damage. While he claims to be the strongest warrior in the land, he is found trapped by weak enemies or claiming the glory of another bug's deeds. He regards the Knight as beneath him and accuses them of constantly getting in his way.My only other complaint is that once the MC gets to the magic school part of the story, the little sister kind of vanishes. Sometimes for many chapters at a time. And that was a little bit of a bummer, because her presence very much made this story unique to me. She started popping up a little bit more toward the end, so hopefully that'll continue.

Maybe my favorite installation in this series so far. The fool Is becoming not only powerful in body but also in mind. His process is paced properly and as a reader I’m enjoying watching the growth. Alex paused just as he was about to pull open the kitchen door. That was all news to him. McHarris paid well enough, but he terrorized all his assistants. Welts still marked the young man’s arms from when he’d been too slow whipping the custard a couple of days ago. Kyembe glanced at Claygon, then gave Alex a grin dripping with malicious glee. “Simply say the word, my friend.” This street was usually one of the last to go dark. The Bear’s Bowl tavern would usually be spitting out drunken, brawling farmhands by now. As Alex passed by, the entire building was already dark and silent. The Lu Family inn would have firelight and laughter booming as the last diners finished up for the night, yet now there was only a small light burning through the shuttered windows. No guests could be heard.I'll give you a hint on how to get through the first part of this book. Drink two of Alex's Haste Potions, and speed read through it as fast as you can. It was really bad writing. I didn't give it a 5 star rating be ause the characters are poorly developed. They're all just super good at everything and everything just sort of works out despite minor danger. Actually, the more I think about it, the more this seems like a fantasy-themed slice of life than high fantasy adventure. However, at the very end of the novel, when Ellina plans to leave the kingdom, she does catch a glimpse of the Knight as she's returning to the surface. Small irritation, Theresa mentions getting another date, but none happens in this book. The closest event to a date is some training that has some fun.
