Description

Sambrook, Tom (2000). "Sharp exchange over the blunt scythe of selection". The Times Higher Education Supplement (1444). By choosing to have an entry inscribed in the book, the individual is not only having a memorial that is permanent, but is remembering their loved one in a personal and unique way.

Jane and I sat and watched them all. She muttered something about this song being ages old and that her parents used to listen to it. Then she said the best night to join them was Saturday. They all loved watching Dallas. She wanted me to join them, and, as I watched the other girls yelping and leaping around the room and giggling with each other, I decided I would. Through these topics, and the Gothic atmosphere the British author imbues her illustrations with, Thornhill is a deeply sad novel that transmits a crippling feeling of hopelessness, sadness, despair, and, above all, of loneliness. In a crescendo of emotions, Thornhill reaches its peak in an outburst of desperation, very reminiscent of Stephen King’s Carrie —even if Mary’s outburst is rather futile. In any case, in the end, when both timelines collide, Mary finds what she had missed throughout her entire life: a friend who loves her for who she is. The end transmits a crystal-clear metaphor: neglect has its consequences and even if the victim of it will not end up alone, it will scar their existence for life —and death. Thornhill was not scary to me as an adult but it probably would be to the kids in age demographic it was written for. At its heart, Grenville’s work focuses on how to deal with guilt, grief and loss, as Sarah strives to come to terms with the loss of her first love and the discovery of her father’s guilt. Her descriptions of the country in which the Thornhill family lives on the Hawkesbury River is evocative. This is what that area looks like, much the same today as it looked two hundred years ago. It’s great up here, actually. I am the only girl with my own sink and bathroom. I love having the highest room in the whole building, being able to look up at the topmost branches of the trees outside. I can watch the birds skim past, fast and free. Carefree.
