That’s always fun and exciting.” Part of my love for Beautiful Freak might come from the fact that I first heard it at the exactly right moment of my life. To say that I was a depressed teenager is probably a bit of an overstatement, but suffice to say that the lyrics really resonated with me, and as I was just becoming more interested in music when I heard it, it had a huge impact on my taste.

Returning this year with The Destruction, the first Eels album in four years, we took the opportunity to speak with E. E is a bit like the friend we all have that you always worry a bit about, the one prone to dramatic pronouncements who the world is always weighing too heavily on to bear. The one who takes every social problem as a personal affront and failure, who excludes him or herself from gatherings under the assumption that their presence will only bring everyone down. He tinkers away with his toy instruments and dares not dream of anything better. Why bring this up now? Because albums like Beautiful Freak would act as the musical equivalent of the psychiatrist's couch. Ringo Starr asked the EELS to join him to sing The Beatles' "With A Little Help From My Friends" on stage at the Norwegian Wood Festival in Oslo, Norway Saturday night.
