Thomas made a very small income and lived a life of near poverty with his wife and son, although he purposefully chose not to participate in the comforts of modern day life. Sources say he didn’t even allow a vacuum cleaner in his home, because it was too noisy! Owen Sheers (b. 1974) is a novelist, poet, playwright and TV and radio presenter. Born in Fiji but brought up in Abergavenny, his poems and novels often evoke the rural landscape he grew up in. But it’s the diversity and ambition of his work that makes him stand out: Sheers worked with the actor Michael Sheen to create a three-day passion play which unfolded over the Easter weekend of 2011 in Port Talbot. Sheers’ verse-drama Pink Mist was performed to great critical acclaim at the Bristol Old Vic, while his BAFTA-nominated film-poem, The Green Hollow, dealt with the tragedy of the Aberfan disaster. He is Professor in Creativity at Swansea University. 8. Gillian Clarke is one of the best-known Welsh poets to date. Her work is widely read in the United Kingdom, particularly in schools. This poem references a famous part of the southern Welsh landscape.

However ingenious, man’s formulations of the complex world are always inadequate. No sooner are they completed than they need to be re-drawn. The sheer busyness of these medieval poems make them feel as if they come from a universe closer, artistically, to a linguistic Big Bang when sounds and images were more intimate with each other, and the idea of having a larger space between them had not yet occurred to artists and writers. Think of the matter-filled universes of Fra Angelico, as opposed to the cooler spaces of the slightly later Piero della Francesca. The complex meters hold this dense, earlier universe together like dark matter. We can also read the minute details as a fractal account of infinity where, no matter on how small a scale we look at the universe, further vistas of patterns reveal themselves. Welsh is one of the earlier Indo-European languages. When a Sanskrit scholar heard me recite some Welsh verses, she commented that they reminded her of the sound of Sanskrit—a most intriguing connection. Note on form:ENGLYN a quatrain from Welsh poetry of 30 syllables in four lines 10,6,7,7.The sixth syllable of line one annouces the rhyme, the last syllable of succeeding three lines rhyme with it.(The final syllable of line one is without rhyme). The content often has an enigmatic quality. Trained in the Welsh bardic tradition, Dafydd ap Gwilym wrote predominantly in rhymed couplets, with the compound expressions and complex syntax that mark medieval Welsh poetry. His poems feature variations on the cynghanedd, a Welsh form using consonantal echo, and often rhyme, within the unit of the line. Many of his poems praise wealthy patrons, in keeping with the Welsh “Poets of the Princes” tradition. In total, there are 24 Welsh poetic forms and four metres. The forms have a tendency to be quite short – an Englyn Milwr, for example, was a form used by soldiers to send short messages home during World War I. Sometimes referred to as a British haiku, every verse is composed of three lines, each seven syllables long, all of which rhyme with each other. Though the expressive lines do lend it certain similarities to the Japanese style, the Englyn has a very Welsh identity. Rhyme is an integral aspect of Welsh poetic forms and so, unlike the haiku, each of a verse’s three lines is monorhymed, that is they end in the same rhyme. Harmonious lines But it was more than a love letter - Pugh was asking her to marry him as he wrote, "My ravished Soul doth ever long to see, The Marriage Knot so firmly ty'd between thee and me."

See it for yourself Poets who had mastered the cynghanedd during this century were hailed as “pencerdds”, chiefs-of-song. It would take approximately nine years to master the forms and metres required. In recognition of his position, the pencerdd was granted a special chair in the royal court. There were other poetic positions within the royal household, too, such as bardd teulu – poet to the household – an officer of the court tasked with the duty of performing his work to the queen. The lowest position was that of the musician, the cerddor. Born in Cardiff and now living in Ceredigion, Gillian Clarke (b. 1937) became the third National Poet of Wales in 2008. Her work has been translated into ten languages, and she has been awarded the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry. She has also written radio and theatre drama and translated poetry and prose from Welsh. The Gathering/Yr Helfa, commissioned by the National Theatre of Wales, was performed on Snowdon in 2014. She regularly tutors poetry masterclasses at Tŷ Newydd, the National Writing Centre of Wales in Llanystwmdwy, North Wales. Her latest work is a version of the 7th-century Welsh poem Y Gododdin – which makes the first-ever reference to King Arthur. 2.
