The finish, though not as long as its elder sibling Lagavulin 16, is satisfyingly warm and lingering.

Despite the higher score and my personal preference for the fuller profile of the 16, the 8 stands its ground, promising an experience that’s crisp and lively. Lagavulin has sponsored the Islay Jazz festival since 2010 and celebrates the occasion by releasing a limited edition bottling. I’ve never encountered bubblegum in any Lagavulin I’ve had, but that’s the thing about young whisky; it reveals characteristics that might get covered up the older it gets. John Johnston founded the Lagavulin distillery in 1816, though there had been as many as ten illicit distilleries in the area since 1742. It’s more than earned its place in my current regular rotation of Laphraoig Lore, Springbank 12, Adbeg Uigedail, the Lagavulin 12, and Highland Park Valkyrie.

A celebration of the people and craft that have made Lagavulin great over the last two centuries, its fragrant, tea-scented smoke alongside nose-drying, maritime aromas is unlocked with just a drop of water. Each sip had unfurling complex layers of ripe fruits, toasted nuts, and a distinguished peat smoke that culminated in a long, spicy finish. Taste wise, this is one of the worst single malts of any distiller I have ever tasted-from the pale water color to something tasting like rot gut.

Something else that was pointed out to me is that Lagavulin 16 is chill-filtered, while the 8 is not, making the 8 a little more traditional. While we have taken care in preparing this summary and believe it is accurate, it is not a substitute for your reading the product packaging and label prior to use.

Bu ekspresyon aynı zamanda, 1880’lerde Lagavulin damıtımevini ziyaret eden ve sonrasında markanın 8 yıllık ekspresyonlarına hayranlığını dile getiren ünlü viski tarihçisi Alfred Barnard’a da adanmış bir viski. Something about paying almost as much money for an 8 year-old when something from the distillery is available at TWICE the age and only 5% lower ABV… that chafes me in ways I can’t quite put into words. The age statement was apparently chosen because historic distillery chronicler Alfred Barnard made reference to an “exceptionally fine” 8-year-old whisky back in 1886.

For those struggling with the less-conventional experience this offers, stick with the 16 (or keep drinking Highland). With a light body that becomes pleasantly oily, the Lagavulin 8-Year-Old palate boasts a magnificently full-on Lagavulin taste that’s somehow even bigger than you expect. Mackie founded the Malt Mill distillery in disused Lagavulin buildings in 1908, though it closed in 1962. The youthful 8 delivered a slightly brighter, more vibrant feel on the tongue, the higher alcohol content adding a spark that the more rounded 16 lacked. A regular sight in the Special Releases, this expression has enjoyed a dozen years of maturation in refill American oak casks before being bottled up at 56. That’s why Lagavulin thought that 8YO whisky would be a fitting tribute for their milestone anniversary. The 48% ABV on this dram works very well for the younger vintage: enhances the flavor, but surprisingly without the burn.
