The tale starts off with Cato and Macro escorting Queen Boudica of the Iceni towards Londinium to renew her pledge to Rome and its Governor Suetonius, after the death of her husband King Prasutagus of the Iceni, when during that voyage she's robbed of her tribute to Rome by some Roman bandits. The second volume, The Generals, was released on 31 May 2007 and the third volume Fire and Sword was released in January 2009.

The books cover the experiences of the two soldiers, initially as experienced centurion and new optio, in battles in Germania and the invasion of Britain by Claudius as part of the Legio II Augusta. On the other hand, Cato is just a teenager, who previously grew up as a slave in the Imperial Palace. He is aware of the risks involved in the mission, but does not fear about the outcome as he has already been involved in a number of missions like this in his battle-scarred career. I fell in love with this series about our man Macro and Cato, wonderful stories that pull you right in to what must have happened in Rome and it’s surrounding provinces.

Cato is in his teen years, grew up in the Imperial Palace as a slave, and at the start of the series joins the Eagles as Macro's Optio. We all know how the uprising played out through historical accounts but will our Roman heroes live through the revolt?
