I wrote my first stories on my mother’s typewriter when I was five. I’ve still got some of them. One was about a rabbit called Hamish and a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Another, Ebany the Mouse Goddess, concerned a tribe of mice who burrowed to safety beneath an oncoming glacier. At school I wrote several plays, including one about the murder of Tutankhamun, and another about a family of cavemen.

For the past few years I’ve tried to keep it to just a few big trips, to limit my carbon footprint. Thus for the three new books (VIPER’S DAUGHTER, SKIN TAKER & WOLFBANE) I’ve done only three trips: to Siberia, to Alaska and Haida Gwaii in British Columbia, and to north Norway. I would love to visit Scoresbysund in Greenland, which I believe is the biggest fjord in the world. I’d also love to visit the Faroes. (As you can see, I tend to head north whenever I can.) However, what with the pandemic, I don’t think I’l be going anywhere for quite a long time to come. Eyewitness accounts of a meteorite in 1908 that blasted a remote Siberian region provided colour, although wherever possible Paver brings her writing to life from events she has experienced. These range from the tantalising to the terrifying: she has swum with killer whales beyond the Arctic Circle, explored ice caves under Alaskan glaciers and faced a mother bear with two cubs on a remote trail in southern California. “I was utterly terrified,” she says of the last of these. “She was very defensive and came towards me, clashing her jaws together.” Run wild with Wolf Brother in a Stone Age world we all want to be a part of with million-copy-selling author, Michelle Paver. Danger, magic and non-stop adventure await Torak, Renn and Wolf. The Clans will be tested as never before, as they battle to find ways to survive and thrive in their beloved Forest. In the Dark Time of midwinter, disaster strikes the Forest. Chaos rules. Bears woken from their dens prowl the shadowy valleys. Desperate clans battle for survival. Only demons thrive. With their world in turmoil, Torak, Renn and Wolf are tested as never before. And as a new evil haunts the devastated land, Torak must risk his sanity, his life and even his souls to save everything he loves...Meticulously researched, atmospheric [...] and relentless, this instalment deservedly introduces Paver to a new generation of readers' Guardian But I could be reading into this too much and seeing the wrong things to focus on. I trust Michelle Paver to come to a good resolution. Would it be as impactful as Ghost Hunter was for me? Probably not. Would it end terribly? I don't think so. I feel like Michelle Paver has warmed up enough now that Torak and Renn and Wolf's stories will be satisfying enough. However, I think my favourite element of this series is its creepy and ominous atmosphere. I thought that I’d perhaps misremembered how scary this series could occasionally get, but even now, reading Skin Taker as an adult, I’m impressed by how Michelle Paver is able to portray the scarier elements of the spirit world while still writing a book aimed at older children/younger teens.

Another great instalment to the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series. I couldn't recommend these books enough for any child from the age of nine (or younger, if they are a confident reader), as they are both very well-written stories that have a fantastic moral/ideology to them that makes reading such a joy and beneficial activity. Candle Cove has haunted Janice ever since she returned to the real world, and though she has tried to move on it still leaves its mark. Ongoing nightmares, being treated as crazy and the endless struggle to repair her relationship with her older sister, Melrose. Every time I read one of these books, it doesn't matter which one, there is always such a sense of safety, of coming home, and honestly it's a feeling I cannot get enough of. Even in the darkest moments, the Forest is a welcome respite from the real world. I can almost smell the tang of pine blood, hear the voices of the trees as they chatter among themselves as I pass. In Skin Taker Torak, Renn, Wolf and all of the Clans face their greatest devastation yet. When death comes from the sky all of the clans are scattered and thrown into panic and turmoil which grows greater still when The First Tree no longer appears in the long winter nights. Torak, Renn, Dark, Wolf and their ravens must push their skills to their limits to save what remains of the Forest. When she mysteriously disappears, Torak and Wolf brave the Far North to find her. At the mercy of the Sea Mother and haunted by ravenous ice bears, their quest leads them to the Edge of the World. Skin Taker At the front of the book, there’s a beautiful map of the setting. Do you draw out maps like this one when you’re planning?

I know you research your books meticulously and often visit to places like Alaska for inspiration. Is there anywhere you haven’t been that you’d like to visit? In the " Screaming Episode", the Skin-Taker is seen screaming and flailing around violently along with the other puppets. After this episode the Skin-Taker's puppet was badly damaged. His jaw was hanging off one hinge, and parts of his arms were torn off.

The dreadful secret that Torak carries with him at the close of SOUL EATER is revealed and he is cast out from the clans. It is his fourteenth summer. He's alone, cut off even from Wolf and Renn.
