Also, the prince deserved better than getting ghosted. There was nothing in the story that says he was anything other than a good guy. <--doesn't mean she needs to love him, but it does mean he should get more than a lifetime of wondering if his fiancee got eaten by a bear.

Neil Gaiman has just added a fairytale retelling, The Sleeper and the Spindle, to his list of books for younger readers. While earlier titles, such as Coraline and The Graveyard Book, feature strong fairy- and folktale elements, and false mothers, eerie seductresses, otherworlds and fell creatures abound throughout his work, this is the first time he’s set his own stamp on a well-worn, classic story. Usually a man is saving the day, saving the princess or town from DANGER. No, not this story. In fact, there is very little talk about men, besides the three dwarfs. In this story as you read you find that there was a spell cast on this small town, because of Sleeping Beauty. The people as well as the sleeping beauty have been asleep for some time now. Many have tried to save them, but all have failed. On the eve of her wedding, a young queen sets out to rescue a princess from an enchantment. She casts aside her fine wedding clothes, takes her chain mail and her sword and follows her brave dwarf retainers into the tunnels under the mountain towards the sleeping kingdom. This queen will decide her own future - and the princess who needs rescuing is not quite what she seems. This novel is filled with some of the most gorgeous illustrations I have ever laid my eyes on. Chris Riddell is an epic, pencil-wielding Wizard who I can't believe I've never heard of before. After stalking some of his other collaborations (Goth Girl, etc) I can definitely see myself buying more of his works! *grabby hands*

Upper KS2 Resource December 2017 - Resources for Teachers

The strong female main character, the queen, was brave and a perfect role model for young children. Wow! Another exciting Neil Gaiman book! I loved this book and thoroughly enjoyed reading it from start to finish. The best part was that all the leading characters were strong, powerful and determined women, even if some were good and some were evil! My favourite character was the aueen. Brave and resilient, she battles through numerous challenges and sacrifices herself to save her people. I got this book from the library but I can tell you it is going to be added to my bookshelves as I must have it. The story is so different and dark and good. The graphics are AMAZING!A thrillingly reimagined fairy tale from the truly magical combination of author Neil Gaiman and illustrator Chris Riddell - weaving together a sort-of Snow White and an almost Sleeping Beauty with a thread of dark magic, which will hold readers spellbound from start to finish. Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical Moments I like that he made the queen a badass, but more than that, I liked that she was the one who kissed the sleeping princess without it turning into some sort of crappy, jerk-off lesbian fantasy material.

The sleeper and the spindle : Gaiman, Neil : Free Download

This release is an extended cut of the story broadcast on BBC Radio 4, and features an exclusive introduction from Neil Gaiman. Warning poster, diary entry, dialogue, estate agent’s description, character description, missing narrative Main Outcome: and the queen who is ready for some adventure, or so it seems, heads out to see what this nonsense is all about! On the whole, I liked this book but also realised something rather interesting - this book contained a whole lot of different fairy stories, for example Sleeping Beauty [sleeper], Snow White [dwarves]. The only part I found creepy was when all the people were coated in spider webs! I wonder what the queen felt like that time? While I generally fall into the “idiot overzealous fangirl” side of the spectrum when it comes to Gaiman, this one wasn’t quite as good as Snow, Glass, Apples so it hovered around the 3.5 mark. I’m rounding up, however, because there was a little more to the story than met the eye that left Mitchell and I looking something like this . . . .
