Description

The driver is a mammoth 70mm Aluminum covered liquid crystal polymer (LCP) with a magnesium dome. It self the driver had a new magnet which is developed by sony. Inside the box, the headphones are securely nestled along with ear tips, cables, and a luxurious carrying case. Each accessory is placed with care, reflecting the premium nature of what lies within. The next thing is the typical recessed lower mids to make everything sound clear (i'm not a fan of this) and a bit cold but thats a slight change. Its still done very tastefull, especially in comparison with its direct competitors. Other than that, the mids are excellent. You can grasp even the slightest change and the tiniest details as they are just insanely fast. Pairing and scaling: Z1R is capable of so much Bass dynamics as it is most noticeably scaling, but overall it is very capable. Soundstage, Dynamic, linearity, detail retrievals are all scaling and exposing the different sources weakness very well. For instant, if I plug it into iPad, the bass becomes boomy and mushy, into my WM1Z and it slams with resolution and warmer density of tonality, into my Opus 2 and it is snappier, tighter, faster, into my Ta-zh1ES and soundstage became godly with the best Bass Dynamic from Z1R....those are only some examples. The treble on the IER-Z1R just barely rides the line between 'clear and emphasized' and 'sibilant and piercing'. With a deep seal and the right tips, it shows off an incredible extension without being fatiguing. I could definitely see it being too much for some listeners, but I personally found it right where I'd like it.

It's not a sound dissected into parts; it's a complete musical experience. From the most complex compositions to the simplest melodies, the IER-Z1R translates them into an auditory landscape that feels alive.

The Sony IER-Z1R didn’t just appear out of thin air; it resulted from years of meticulous engineering and a passion for sound perfection. When Sony set out to create their Signature Series, they aimed for more than just a new product; they aimed for an experience. It sounds studio room like in its presentation, like you're playing your music on a speaker in a closed room. From all the Headphones i've listened and/or owned so far (HD800S, HD820, Several Focal and LCD, pretty much everything from Meze and Hifiman, Moondrop VENUS and so on) nothing ever sounded as Live as the MDR-Z1R I was testing to get some context so that I can prepare for the 11/11 sale. But at this rate, maybe I will end up not buying anything. winner: I don't know on this one honestly, The C I feel is too thin so I don't like it, but The EF is very good and overall is a bit better than the Z1R despite it sounding scooped out at times.

Soundstage is wider and taller on the IER-Z1R but stage depth is about par on the U12t. Imaging is tad more precise on the U12t, though these are marginal differences. Where I found more palpable was the difference in coherence. U12t, despite the 12 drivers, sounded more coherent than the IER-Z1R. Also a slight note about build/accessories: Sony IER-Z1R is quite a bit ahead on those aspects. These look and feel stunning in the hands. The way Sony presented them in the little jewelry box really solidifies what Sony wanted these to be; a halo product that is one of a kind. They're built very well and can easily last generations with the machining being super precise. Treble is one of the best that I’ve heard and has converted me into a DD-tweeter fan. Well-extended and smooth with no peaks or dips throughout, whilst conveying enough energy for sparkle. Transients are extremely snappy, resulting in zero splashiness or overlap. The cable included is fine except for the ear hooks. Now, these are very heavy earpieces and they can put a lot of strain on your ears if there's no support. The ear hooks are so loose, they they don't actually loop around the ear on hold the earphone up. For me it just hovers above my ears. I would heavily appreciate a metal wire or something that i can shape to my ear.

All these headphones come in nice boxes; though the IER-Z1R comes with a cardboard jewelry box, with drawers. Also for the record, the IER-Z1R comes included with the greatest of cables, both 3.5mm and 4.4mm balanced. Of all the headphones talked about here, it’s the IEM which is dependent on fit. Meaning they may not fit your ears, and if they don’t fit your ears the party is over. This single concept makes full-size headphones much easier to use in the end. Though for this extra effort we are gifted with a inner head-stage. As the tip sits inside your cranium the sound is both inside and outside your head. This concept in and of itself gets us a different perspective in sound display. Also I can’t help but reinforce the medical insertion of detail into your brain. The IEMs go the extra mile to put the music closer to your soul and under your skin. Also the display is like reading a normal size book where full-size headphones can almost take more effort to take in? Vocals from Stromae sound more sharp, rough and dominant within the mix ever so slightly, but is never shadowed, nor-overemphasized compared to the entire ensemble (eg. Fils de joie) Extension wise, I have to say that The Z1R extends way better than the Ether C and EF, the extension and decay is much more noticeable due to both better technicalities and also extra emphasis, there details in my music that I never notice in the other 2 cans that I do with the Z1R. As for the treble, the Campfire Andromeda 2020 has really well-executed treble that’s smooth, non-fatiguing, and well-extended but pales in comparison to the treble on the IER-Z1R. Cymbal hits have a presence and crunch that’s just missing on the Andromeda 2020. In combination with the pushed treble, they give you an unique impression of an speaker system in an perfect room which is a very fun tuning, i am absolutely admitting that, but it can get tiresome and it is not an accurate rendering of the song (again, not an IEM, so no issue). You should be aware of that. They are not objectively perfect. They may be subjectively perfect for some, but there exists songs who do not cope with this tuning well. The balance of the extreme low-end sub-bass being substantial enough to slam with authority is tempered by the speed of the other dynamic driver, producing beautiful, richer, detailed, and textured mid-bass. The crossover point in these drivers is so seamless you don’t even know it’s happening, and the result is an immersive balance of grandeur and clarity. The earpads are hand stitched so it is impossible to have identical pads on each side, mine is ever so slightly softer on the left side, but as far as I can tell the comfort and the sound are unaffected by this slight variation. IER-Z1R fit-pics are basically obligatory in the audio Discord servers I hang in. Yeah, it sort of fits and I get a decent seal, but at the expense of my ear’s viriginty. As for ear tips, the IER-Z1R comes with a good selection of foam and silicone. I personally found the silicone to be the more comfortable of the two, and to work best with the fit, even compared to some 3rd party tips I've tried. But if anyone has recommendations, I'd love to hear them.

I end this not technical review or thoughts by apologizing to my Z1R because trying to cheat on it. In terms of midrange, I prefer the A8000’s vocals by a margin over the IER-Z1R. Final knows how to tune the midrange and the vocals/string instruments are as articulate as they can be on the A8000. Every subtle nuance is highlighted including vocalists breathing in/out. Timbre is another strong point here with the metallic tinge of steel strings being evident against the more natural, softer tone of nylon strings. This is a summation which encapsulates the total review in a short fast read. The basic concepts have been reduced for folks skimming along short of time or interest. The mids are where the Sony IER-Z1R shines with a rare radiance in in-ear headphones. Vocals are presented with a lush, vibrant quality that feels almost tangible. Whether it's the delicate voice of a solo artist or the intricate play of instruments, the mids are a revelation. This will by my first review as I go through and finally review my collection. The IER-Z1R is one of my favorites and seemed like a great place to get started. Sorry for the photo quality, I'm still using iphone 4 and my photo taking skills are quite poor T_T , but that will soon to change with the Samsung Galaxy S8 hopefully. Midrange: Vocals are a bit of a mixed bag. Higher-pitched male vocals have a noticeable dip; I got this impression while listening to Keith Urban’s “Sweet Thing”. His voice takes on a slightly hollow or recessed quality that I don’t get as much with the U12t. And just in general, I wasn’t particularly impressed with male vocals on the IER-Z1R. Conversely, female vocals are more pronounced. I listen to a lot of K-Pop/J-Pop, and stuff by the likes of Taeyeon and Aimer simply shines on the IER-Z1R. I would say that the tuning is to mimic a speaker setup in a well damped rrom instead of open and airy like a live performance.
