The lore has undergone revision and expansion in the new edition and there is an awful lot to play with. That way the narrator could marvel at the events in a manner that would be odd for a fighter ace already immersed in the world. Simlex had previously served in the field with the noble Commissar Tobia von Shard, and it was his recommendation that saw him assigned to Bacchus. While I quite enjoyed this further example of how corrupt the Imperium is, its main benefit as a setting is the way that Flowers makes Bacchus appear as unpleasant and deadly as possible, and it provides a very distinctive and memorable background for many of the book’s fantastic scenes.

Despite this interesting narration choice, this novel has a brilliant, fast pace to it and the reader is never left in a dull spot, as there is always some cool action, fascinating intrigue or powerful dive into a character occurring throughout.In that sense her contempt is quite rational, for that is ultimately how the Imperium treats the majority of its soldiers. She is not the steadfast hero he’d envisioned, merely an embittered soldier who holds him and his project in contempt. Determined to make the situation work, Simlex attempts to chronicle the reluctant Shard’s skills, while also investigating the strange occurrences on Bacchus. He makes for a brilliant viewpoint characters, not least because while in theory he has access to a lot of information about what’s out there in the galaxy, in truth he understands very little about what things are really like (as opposed to Shard, who has few of Simlex’s privileges but a greater grasp of the realities of life).

Through the novel we learn that there are various approaches to the propagandists’ art, some involving semi-accurate portals of life within the Imperium, others splicing together image and sound to create whatever tale they deem suitable, irrespective of its relation to the truth.Though a mongrel settlement, it was founded by former members of House Orlock and this culture shapes the inhabitants. I must admit that while I deeply enjoyed Outgunned’s brilliant narrative, it honestly wasn’t what I was expecting when I first started reading it. For Fire Made Flesh I produced an Excel spreadsheet which broke down each section, chapter and key events on characters arcs; it had about ninety rows by the end. DF: Outgunned is a contemporary tale that takes place in Subsector Yossarian, a backwater collection of planets mercifully removed from the dangers of the Great Rift. The Aeronautica Imperialis are the masters of the skies in the 41st millennium, waging wars of breakneck aerial combat where only skill stands between victory and death.
