Except in this case I haven’t seen a previous edition: I didn’t own any of the Times atlases before this one turned up. It provides some solid information but isn't quite as in-depth as the more comprehensive atlases out there, which may be by design so as not to overwhelm young readers. The extraordinarily extensive front matter continues with a “Gazetteer of Nations” that has been comprehensively checked and updated to include recent economic and political changes, and a 48-page “Introduction to World Geography,” beautifully illustrated with tables and graphs on numerous topics of geographic significance, such as the geology and atmosphere of Earth, food and water supply, biodiversity, energy, global conflict, human health, and standards of living. A beautifully illustrated section on current issues, including climate change, economy and energy, and a new section on the power of maps. All the map symbols, all the typefaces and font sizes, all the lines and squiggles, explained in one spot.

In her spare time, she teaches herself French and Italian, has earned an ESL teaching certificate, traveled extensively throughout Europe and the United States, and unashamedly devours television shows and books. Head of Map Collections at the British Library, Peter Barber has here compiled an historic and lavish atlas, charting the progress of civilization as our knowledge of the world expanded. The 1922 Times Survey Atlas of the World, and many other maps and atlases, are viewable online at DavidRumsey. Most of the atlases on this list are rather hefty, which is generally desired since this allows for larger maps and images.Taking in the defiant relics of ancient cities such as Ani, a once thriving metropolis lost to conquered lands, and the church tower of San Juan Parangaricuto, that miraculously stands as the sole survivor of a town sunk by lava. The Oxford Atlas of the World is more directly comparable to the smaller Times Concise in terms of physical size and page count. Place names (including alternative name forms required for the index) are extracted from Collins Bartholomew's Locate Oracle database. Maps: Chicago; New York; Boston; Quebec; Philladelphia; Montreal; San Francisco; Washington; Otowa; Baltimore; Toronto; New Orleans; St. It’s not like the competition doesn’t do this: both my editions of the Oxford (the 14th) and the National Geographic (the ninth) put this information on the endpapers.

Standing as symbols of worship, testaments to kingships or even the strange and wonderful traditions of old and new, these curious places are not just extraordinary sights but reflections on man’s own relationship with the world around us.Some revisions and improvements were made; endpaper keys show which parts of the world are covered by which plates; an international glossary gives the English equivalents of common name-words. Of course, there are times when you want a small book that you can keep in a backpack for reference when on the go, which is where the diminutive Collins World Atlas fits in. This option is ideal for middle schoolers but can still be helpful for high schoolers and adults, as well as comprehensible to younger children. So much history resides in each map–cultural, mythological, navigational–expressing the unlimited extent of human imagination. There is also quite a bit of useful information about how the Earth is made up and how it works, all of which is enhanced by accompanying facts and figures.
