The second wonderful message is the importance of a CAC (Coronary Calcium CT) to determine risk for cardiovascular event along with scoring the usual risk factors. Dr. Jeffry Gerber has no financial ties to pharmaceutical, diagnostics or medical device companies. He has no financial ties to the food industry.

Full Book Name: Eat Rich, Live Long: Mastering the Low-Carb Keto Spectrum for Weight Loss and Longevity

I think this book provides excellent advice. I have that opinion because in one book it contains a summary and expansion on good, accurate, improved dietary advice and the history of why we have been given bad advice for so long based on flawed research, forceful personalities, and suppressed / ignored research that disagreed with the so-called "experts" that I have read about in many other books over the past couple of years. Books by; Gary Taubes, John Yudkin, Robert Lustig, Jason Fung, Nina Teicholz, Timothy Noakes, and several others. And this book mostly agrees with those books and condenses the information into one volume. Dr. Gerber is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, the Obesity Action Coalition, the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians, the Colorado Medical Society, the Arapahoe-Douglas-Elbert Medical Society and the Weston A. Price Foundation. Low Leptin tells your brain you are starving. Several mechanisms including decreased thermogenesis and increased Ghrelin (increased hunger) are 2 ways Leptin causes slow weight regain even on a reduced calorie diet over the long term.

Thus if someone has 5% cardiovascular risk and a positive CAC (1 or>), they need to lower their ApoB <80 or LDLp < 1,000. Obesity and overweight are truly the resultant symptoms of chronic metabolic disease, ultimately caused by the many inflammatory foods in our diet. Blaming behavior (that we eat too much and exercise too little) for why we get fat is a short-sighted explanation, especially when considering our present day understanding of metabolism.” This book has changed all that for me. It presents the science behind this in a way that meets the needs of even sceptics like me. Simply and in enough detail to give an understanding of how all this incredibly complicated biochemistry works without making your eyes glaze over

Ivor Cummins is a world-renowned chemical engineer with a long career in the medical device and other industries. Although he has been in many roles as technical leader, his specialty is leading teams in complex problem-solving efforts. This is an excellent text. A great guide for people interested in LCHF(Low Carbohydrate High Fat) or Atkins type diet. The advice to have a CAC, coronary artery calcium scan done to find your CAS Score. I have been a radiation worker for forty years, six years with nuclear reactors, and 34 years working on diagnostic imaging equipment, X-ray machines. X-rays are not harmless, the more people who receive more exposure than absolutely necessary the more people who may suffer health issues caused by the radiation exposure.

This book is great for the curious and motivated person, but not necessarily scientific-knowledged, who wants to learn and apply low-carb/keto diets for its benefits in treating/reversing metabolic damage caused by Westernised diets. To not mention the PCSK9 treatment option reflects a very biased approach to the medical treatment of high ApoB (lipoprotein particles) Millions of people have gotten healthy through low-carb plans over the years—and a growing number have discovered the wonderful benefits of ketogenic (Keto) nutrition. Many are confused, though, about how low-carb they should go. Now, Eat Rich, Live Long reveals how mastering the low-carb/Keto spectrum can maximize your weight loss and optimize your health for the long term. I am Board Certified in the American Board of Obesity Medicine. I think any diet can lose weight. The challenge is maintaining that weight loss by finding a diet that is ad libitum and can be maintained for life. The authors neglect the science that the excess fat cells the obese have never disappear even with Bariatric surgery. The large number of shrunken fat cells in the reduced obese have a very low leptin level.Filled with lots of references to scientific articles/studies and Dr. Gerber's own patients stories, it offers not only a plan/prescription to lower your insulin levels (the master hormone to manage your weight, burning fat and reducing chronic disease), but also clear explanations about all the persistent nutritional myths of the day, especially about cholesterol / cholesterol ratios and their impact on heart disease, daily glucose intake, obesity and hormone disregulation, saturated fat vs polyunsaturated fat and much more. We have been helping our patients improve their health and optimize their weight with prescribed lifestyle modification. We redefine healthy nutrition and teach patients about the relationship between unhealthy refined and processed foods and chronic illness. The science of carbohydrate and fat metabolism, insulin resistance, inflammation and chronic metabolic disease is revealing.” I found out about this book by watching an interview with one of the authors, Ivor Cummins, on YouTube. I would never have looked at the book based on the title/cover. You can take control of your health, lose weight, prevent disease, and enjoy a long and healthy life. This is all about WILL POWER which can't be sustained over 5-10 years with terrible hunger caused by a low calorie diet and low leptin.Dr. Gerber trained at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia and graduated in 1986. He completed a medical Residency in Family Medicine at Abington Memorial Hospital in 1990 and was board certified in Family Medicine in 1991. Dr. Gerber sits for the Family Medicine re-certification exam every ten years and attends continuing medical education programs on a regular basis. He is Level II certified by the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment to treat work related injuries. For IR patients (insulin resistant) meal spacing will increase hunger unless you are on diet medications. Nutritional sacred cows are constantly being challenged in the media. How much fat should we eat -- and which kinds of fats are best? Which fats can contribute to diabetes, heart disease, and early mortality? Does a high-protein diet increase muscle mass and lead to vigorous health -- or can it promote aging, cancer, and early mortality? Which vitamins and minerals should we be taking, if any? How do we change our metabolism so that our bodies burn fat instead of all the sugars we consume? Does intermittent fasting really work? Eat Rich, Live Long lays out the truth based on the latest scientific research.
