Take it camping, into the city, into a wheat field for luscious golden hour portraits, or out into the desert for Americana scenes – I could go on forever.

In this next image the sun was still hitting the upper portions of the grain elevators, but there were buildings behind me that cast a shadow across the entire foreground from the railroad track up to and including part of the elevators. I don’t want anyone thinking that you need top end equipment to get solid results from a beautiful film like Portra, because that just isn’t true and my goal is to never make people feel as though gear make the image. Portra shines though by not turning anything up past around an eight, never mind all the way to eleven.no matter the lighting conditions, even under fluorescent, you can expect beautiful, natural colour. It is a part of the Kodak Portra range of professional quality, daylight-balanced, colour negative films. To me, this golden grass that isn’t in direct sunlight should be about ⅓ stop over a neutral tone so I added that compensation while metering. This film essentially combined the old NC (natural colour) and VC (vivid colour) versions while incorporating some technical advances from the Kodak Vision motion picture films.

The film is daylight balanced and while it’s rated at ISO 400, it has an impressive exposure latitude. Samantha is a regular contributor here at Shoot It With Film, and you can check out her other articleshere, such as How to Shoot Ilford Delta 3200 and Fujifilm Instax Wide 300 Instant Camera Review. As you can see, the flash output really helps here due to adding more daylight white balanced output to the scene. I treat daylight fog the same way as it should be rendered at least a stop over a middle tone to keep the subtle contrast and color. In that same tradition, the new Portra 400 Film is the ideal choice for portrait and fashion photography, as well as for nature, travel and outdoor photography, where the action is fast or the lighting can’t be controlled. In that same tradition, the new PORTRA 400 Film is the ideal choice for portrait and fashion photography, as well as for nature, travel and outdoor photography, where the action is fast or the lighting can? The drum scanner has created a different workflow for me because I have to invert my images manually, but the approach I take to color is just the same as it was back when I used the Epson to scan everything. Portra 400 offers excellent colours, it is fast enough for most situations, and even though it is 400 ISO, it still produces high-quality and fine-grained results. I’ll be completely honest, when I first started getting into film, I wasn’t even interested in Kodak.

Hopefully that will be one of the next emulsions back from the dead, that way I could actually be able to try it out!

Available in the 120, 35mm, and large formats, the film was and still is incredibly popular with photographers who like shooting portraits.

I think that the high dynamic range of digital sensors, along with the natural amount of post processing that goes along with shooting digital has spoiled some photographers (including myself! To do that, I really recommend shooting with your digital camera at ISO 400 and with daylight white balance. There’s good detail in the shadows too and it’s hard to get blown highlights with the wide dynamic range it has.
