So we've settled upon using a cheap flatscreen tv that we place on the table and hook it up to a laptop running MapTool. Each map is imported into MapTool and with that free software we can do anything we need. Place tokens (digital or physical), draw digitally on the map and place the PCs miniatures. I'm sure it can do other stuff. There's way more in there than I use but it serves our purposes. This is a great option for someone looking for affordability and easy storage. Factors to Consider When Choosing a Battle Mat

In terms of the multifunctionality here, it’s actually pretty nice. A lot of battle mats are double-sided, but they typically don’t have two different grids on either side. This mat has one side devoted to a standard square grid and another side with a hexagonal grid. So if you want to play any games that need a hexagonal grid, you can use this mat easily. If the acid fails to remove the deposit, it is time to try a base. Take a moment to thoroughly wipe up any acid that may be lingering on the mat. Sometimes, however, a deposit will not be removed without overdue effort and/or damaging the original material. Should the above three methods fail, I leave it to you to decide how much you are willing to invest in the quest to remove the stain. This answer attempts to provide some clear instructions on methods to remove a deposit while also maintaining the original product’s integrity. A Final Note Pretty much, could anyone help me out in choosing what to buy, with any anecdotes or pro-tips that came in experience?

Forever

Stylistically it isn’t really all that special, it’s a standard white mat, which might look a little plain for some. But most battle mats don’t really need a lot of style since they’re designed to be blank canvases for you to use. Essentially it comes down to personal preference, if your group likes some fantasy-styled elements to play around with you might want a mat that’s more interesting.

Be sure that you have a surface that’s a fair bit bigger than the battle mat you plan to get. You need to account for the space needed for character sheets, notes and the DM’s station. This is especially true if you’re getting a Mat that’s larger than 24” x 36”, since you’ll need a pretty big table to work on.I've never used Crayola Washable markers on a battlemat so I haven't had to deal with this personally, but I have a kid so I'm familiar with a particular resource you might find useful – Crayola has a FAQ of tips for cleaning their products off of materials they weren't meant to be used on. The closest I could find for this situation is for Crayola Washable Markers on vinyl flooring (no wax): ONE OF THE BEST RPG MATS ON THE MARKET - This dry erase battle grid map is double sided, affordable and long lasting. Made with the highest-grade materials and a special UV coating for dry erase, this mat offers a sturdy, trouble-free performance and easily erases. Gridded Battlemat with wet erase markers fun....but takes time to draw out and my skill of drawing is questionable at best. These mats are both 24” x 36” which is a nice and large size. Though it means you’ll need a pretty large surface to get full use out of them. The Battle mats themselves are also of fairly high quality and offer a different style to fit different scenarios and aesthetics. But the mats aren’t the best of the best and can be prone to getting creased or having their corners curl up. So just be careful with how you store and use them.

Reusable battle mats are designed to be used over and over again, making them a cost-effective option for long-term use. They are typically made of durable materials such as vinyl or cloth and can be easily cleaned and stored for future use. Disposable battle mats, on the other hand, are meant to be used once and then discarded. They are often made of paper or other inexpensive materials and are a convenient option for one-time use or for trying out different battle mat designs.
