Vitamin E can be helpful as a moisturizer, making it a good option for people with dry skin, according to our experts. It can also be soothing on sunburned skin, and can fight dark spots and wrinkles when used alongside other antioxidants in a serum. Below, we compiled expert-recommended moisturizers, serums, and oils that are rich in vitamin E. All of the products pair the ingredient with other actives like vitamin C and ferulic acid, which our experts say can help stabilize it and amplify its efficacy. Malin + Goetz Vitamin E Face Moisturizer Benefit from hydrated and balanced skin with the Malin + Goetz Vitamin E Face Moisturiser. The hydrating formula of the moisturiser contains only natural fragrances and colours. There are several different types of scars, says Dr. Rapaport, and you should figure out which kind you have before choosing a treatment. Protects against UV-induced skin damage. According to a publication in the journal Nutrients, vitamin E’s activity as an antioxidant in combination with its presence in human skin means it’s possible that vitamin E may protect the skin from UV damage. There is evidence that topically applied vitamin E, specifically alpha-tocopherol, provides photoprotective activity against acute UV-induced skin damage, such as erythema (redness) and edema (swelling). Additionally, alpha-tocopherol can protect the skin from responses to chronic UVA and UVB exposure, such as wrinkles and skin cancer.

The body naturally produces vitamin E, which you may see referred to as tocopherol or alpha-tocopherol on ingredient lists. In skin in particular, it can help moisturize, defend against environmental damage and soothe inflammation, but its levels don’t stay consistent over time. “While vitamin E naturally occurs in our sebum, providing a built-in, skin-protective barrier, over time the production of the vitamin E decreases,” says Dr. Jeannette Graf, a board-certified dermatologist and professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. It offers other benefits for skin, too; it can help trap moisture in skin, soothe inflammation and defend skin from sun damage. Depending on the type of product you choose, you may need to look out for allergic reactions. Open skin is more sensitive to allergens, says Melanie Palm, MD, a dermatologist at Art of Skin MD. She adds that while silicone-based products are unlikely to cause a reaction, some OTC treatments contain other ingredients that increase the likelihood of a reaction. We tested the RejûvaSil Silicone Scar Gel on two flat scars—one about two years old and one only three months old. The goal in treating both of these scars was to lighten their pigmentation since neither was raised at the start of our testing. While we saw a noticeable difference in the older scar, noting that it faded nicely to the point of mostly blending in with our skin, we didn’t see the same kind of results with the newer scar. While pure vitamin E is easy to find as a pure oil or housed in a capsule (which you then break open and apply to skin), it’s generally not recommended by our experts. For one, they can “clog pores or even be irritating to some skin types, so you may want to avoid them if you have acneic or sensitive skin,” says Yadav. She also recommends acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid, which work well to reduce oil on the skin. “If you have oily or acne-prone skin, consider finding a moisturizer that is lightweight and noncomedogenic, like a hyaluronic acid-based gel formulation,” she says.

Dr. Naana Boakye is a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Bergen Dermatology in Englewood Cliffs, NJ. She takes a holistic approach to skin health, factoring in lifestyle and overall wellness. As a refresher, free radicals are the bad guys—they’re molecules in the environment that damage your skin and weaken its elasticity. Aaand you can’t really avoid them, since they come from everyday things like pollution, cigarette smoke, chemicals, and the sun. Vitamin E, however, is an army that defends your skin against all the sh*t it has to deal with on a daily basis, protecting it like an invisible shield. Some research suggests that vitamin E supplements may promote wound healing. It is possible that topical vitamin E oil might offer similar benefits, but there is little research on the subject. Skin cancer preventionFor people who need their skin to be less dry and itchy, vitamin E seems to do a good job of that,” she says. The moisturizing benefits of vitamin E oil may help the skin look more youthful and less wrinkled.

Dermatologic Surgery, 25(4), 311-315 This ultra-lightweight, non-greasy formula is a hero for combination skin. It doesn’t just replenish moisture, it restores vital hydration, leaving you with happy, healthy-looking skin for 48 hours. Vitamin E is well known for its nourishing properties. “It can help the skin stay moisturized, making it ideal for those with dry skin,” says Yadav. We applied a thin layer of the gel, turned on the vibrating wand, and ran it over the scar area for about two minutes, then applied a scar sheet to leave on for the rest of the day or overnight. Our scar was pretty tough: a pea-sized keloid scar we’ve had for about 20 years. While we didn’t see dramatic results (that’s to be expected with keloid scars, which usually require surgery), we noticed a less dense scar at the end of testing.Bio-Oil Multiuse Skincare Oil: This oil was super hydrating, but also kind of messy. And while it helped clear up our mild scabbing, it didn’t do much in terms of changing the appearance of our scars.
