Description

The MGO rating system was pioneered by Manuka Health after the company discovered it was one of the key naturally occurring compounds that make manuka honey special. The UMF signifies the antibacterial strength of Manuka honey and is directly related to the amount of MG in the honey, not hydrogen peroxide. Quality assurance is paramount when it comes to Manuka honey — an aspect that can’t solely rely on MGO measurement. Unfortunately, MGO can be produced industrially and added to honey. This practice gives birth to ‘fake’ Manuka honey, which can be misleading for consumers. Therefore, measuring only MGO doesn’t guarantee the authenticity and quality of Manuka honey. MGO Concentration Over Time and Storage Conditions

Manuka honey has long been used as a treatment and protective barrier for burns, sores, and other wounds, thanks to its antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Topical application has been shown to enhance the regeneration of tissue, reduce healing time, and even decrease pain in multiple studies. ‘Manuka honey has the ability to stimulate macrophages which are needed for reducing microbial infections and helping in tissue healing,’ says Wakeman. It may even help reverse resistance to antibiotics in bacteria such as MRSA, the Society for General Microbiology found. 5. Promotes oral health The manuka tree has been known for centuries to have special properties and has long been used in traditional medicine, so perhaps it is no surprise that the honey that is produced from the nectar of the tree should equally have unusual properties. Methylglyoxal (MG). A powerful antibiotic compound which is found in large quantities in Manuka honey.

The reason why Manuka honey is unique is because the bush contains strong antibacterial compounds found mostly in Leptospermum plants 1. Components of Manuka Honey MGO in Mānuka honey is naturally made in the hive from DHA which is present in the nectar of the Manuka Bush. Within the hive DHA undergoes the Maillard reaction to naturally form MGO. At Healthy and Natural World, our mission is to empower people to take control of their own health by providing comprehensive, practical and well researched information.

All of the honey in this jar is Monofloral, which means the majority of the nectar the bees use to create this honey comes from the flower of the Manuka bush, a bush native to New Zealand. This results in a higher concentration of the compounds that gives Manuka honey it’s distinct taste, colour and reputation. Tested three times for authenticity & Manuka honey strength: at source in New Zealand, on arrival in the UK and again, before the jar is sealed Ways to incorporate Multifloral Manuka Honey into your everyday routines include mixing it into a warming drink, stirring into a smoothie or smearing

MGO 250+ Manuka Honey is a natural and delicious honey that captures the essence and taste of the natural environment in New Zealand. Honey has been used since ancient times as a topical treatment for wounds and other skin infections. shoppingListJS = new ShoppingListJS({storeId: '11352',catalogId: '28501',langId: '-1'}, {id: '2185949', name: 'Manuka Health MGO 250+ Manuka Honey 250g', image: '', type: 'ItemBean', components: {}, skus: []}, {}, "shoppingListJS"); It’s important to note that the MGO content of Manuka honey changes over time. The MGO concentration initially increases rapidly during the first couple of years after harvest due to the chemical conversion of DHA to MGO. However, as the DHA supply gets used up, the rate of conversion declines. In fact, in honey nearing the end of a five-year shelf life, the MGO concentration begins to drop due to insufficient DHA availability. Many of Manuka’s healthful attributes are thought to relate to its major antibacterial component, methylglyoxal (MGO). Even though MGO is found in most types of honey, it’s usually in much smaller quantities. In manuka honey, MGO comes from the conversion of a compound called dihydroxyacetone, which is found in high concentration in manuka flowers. The higher the concentration of MGO, the stronger the antibiotic effect. ‘Researchers have found that manuka honey has a higher antibacterial activity against various strains of bacteria, with a stronger effect coming from manuka honey with higher MGO levels,’ says Wakeman. 3.
