Meg hasn't got much professional training, but what she does have is passion, ideas and empathy, which endear her to the staff and guests alike. Our bookworms are adding upcoming Katie Fforde books 2022 as soon as they're announced, giving you less searching and more reading time. One Enchanted Evening is a literary hug that filled me with a comforting warmth and made me crave for more.' Katie Fforde writes with an easy style that engages the reader - though the first part of this one didn’t catch me, I had to work a little to engage with the characters. Some of the dialogue was clunky, and maybe that was something to do with the, unusual for her, 1960s setting (rampant sexism, smoking, short skirts etc etc). The grumpy love interest remained a bit of a mystery to me, but I enjoyed their slow coming together. The bigger plot about a rundown Dorset hotel was fun, a bit fairytale-like, and very cosy. The only problem I had with it was in the age of the ‘old lady’, and 1964 only being 19 years from 1945… was she in her late forties/fifties in the war? Or did I miss something? Any issues with the book list you are seeing? Or is there an author or series we don’t have? Let me know!

Published on the 1st of January, 2013, this was to mark a somewhat different direction for the writer Katie Fforde as an author, in that it works to establish a different style and tone. Whilst it contains many of her key trademarked style and wit, it also provides a new perspective on the romance genre, keeping it fresh and irreverent in the process. Once again with a female protagonist, Fforde injects many of her own unique experiences into the narrative, helping to keep it relatable and realistic for her now many loyal readers out there. The hotel is charming, a place I'd love to stay at with its welcoming and homely feel and beautiful location. Meg goes to France for a while too and I enjoyed her time working in a restaurant there. But what really sold this book to me was the romance, the spark between Meg and Justin, and the way their relationship develops throughout the book made my heart sing. It was just so sweet and lovely to watch their burgeoning feelings for each other grow. Aside from that, and once it got going, I enjoyed the story, had a good time with the renovations and the cooking. 3.5 stars Meg is a very talented cook who is planned to stage under a chef in France to be trained. She travels to Dorset to lend a hand when disaster strikes in the hotel her mother works for. But just before the important banquet, the owner's son, Justin shows up to take over the kitchen. One Enchanted Evening is set in the 1960s, I did love the descriptions of Nightingale Woods hotel in the beautiful countryside of Dorset. The hotel was brought to life perfectly and I had no trouble imagining myself staying there in one of the charming rooms. Katie Fforde is excellent at creating worlds. Family politics, whimsical stories of the past, and a lot of passion for this project make the tale a lovely read.

A Springtime Affair: An utterly gorgeous feel-good romance

Pre-order:

From the moment I started reading One Enchanted Evening, I was hooked. The story starts with Meg arriving at the hotel in Dorset to work as a chef. The plot of this novel is excellent and there are twists and turns that keep you guessing along with plenty of adventures with Meg’s wonderful friends. I can always rely on Katie to create and develop beautifully drawn characters who just work perfectly in whatever situation she places them in. The chemistry between Meg and Justin is undeniable, but they are both late to the realisation party as Meg follows her dreams to work in France.

I have to give a special mention to Ambrosine. I could have happily sat beside her for hours as she regaled me with her life stories *sighs*. Shame it doesn't seem to be the case for the owner's son, who firmly believes that women shouldn't be in charge of a professional kitchen at all. One Enchanted evening is everything you need in a novel when the weather outside demands you snuggle under a blanket with a good book.'

Although predictable, it is after all a 'feel good' romance novel, it is very well written. I loved the setting in Dorset and when I thought it a tad old-fashioned, I remembered it was set in the 1960s. I thought some of the characters were lovely, such as the elderly and mysterious Ambrosine, and I even enjoyed the stereoptypes too, who I think were written a bit tongue-in-cheek. Meg and Justin are a brilliant couple, I loved how now matter how hard he tried he couldn’t not love her, not help but appreciated her cooking and admit she was excellent at what she did. Louise and Andrew were a lovely couple too, the mother daughter relationship was written really well, especially with the age difference not huge.
