A tap on the Listen Later button brings up a menu, where you set the time, recording duration, the frequency (once only, daily, all week days, weekends only and once a week) and the station to record. If you have a programme you listen to all the time – the Archers, or Stuart Maconie’s Freak Zone perhaps – this will come in very handy, but it’s very constrained compared with what the old Pure Evoke 3 offers. That top-end model features a card slot, letting you archive recordings rather than just wipe them instantly. The finish on the buttons has been toned down from bright chrome to clouded silver – and the main control dial is now finished in ridged concentric circles. The ReVu function, used to pause radio, has been replaced with the Listen Later feature. Allowing full recording of programmes, it’s slightly more ambitious than ReVu – more on it later. Switch-on the Pure Elan Connect and you’ll be taken straight to network settings, not only for fetching internet radio stations and podcasts, but also to keep time. There follows a slightly confusing set of choices for things such as daylight savings – for which the default is ‘no’… why would anyone want a radio that gives the wrong time for half the year?!. Nevertheless, at least connecting to the home Wi-Fi network is easy if you’re using a WPS-enabled Wi-Fi router. The manual for the Pure One doesn’t list a way to display the serial number. We’ve tried on our One Mi Series 2 and can only see the software version and the device identifier. If you still have the box for the radio the serial number may be displayed on the outside.

Several Pure digital radios can be upgraded to enable reception of DAB+ radio stations. Compatible radios are listed on Pure’s update centre. While other manufacturers of DAB radios deliver retro designs or opt for post-modern use of wood panels, the Pure Elan Connect’s shell is plastic. On the positive side, this means it’s extremely lightweight at 438g – although the four AA batteries you’ll need to make it portable will increase its bulk.

Its fun, bouncy sound works well with music and isn’t too harsh on the lower-quality stations doing the rounds on the DAB spectrum – some use such a low bit-rate as to be all-but unlistenable. Some voice-only broadcasts can make the One Flow sound a little too bass-driven – a tiny bit muffled – but it’s one of the best-sounding models of its size. It’s a pity there are no equalisation options available here, as having some basic control over bass and treble levels could have solved this small issue. When adjusting the volume of the radio or changing radio stations sometimes a sound can be heard through the headphones. This seems to occur in time with the change of information on the display. It’s disappointing to find this on the radio and whether it bothers you could depend on your own listening experience. User interfaceThis radio features a 3.5 mm headphone connectivity option, allowing users to connect their preferred headphones without any hassle. Its portability makes it suitable for on-the-go use and offers flexibility in terms of where it can be used. The Menu button opens the various options which are relevant to the current mode. The large display makes these quite easy to browse and alter. After connecting the radio to the mains or inserting the batteries a push of the knob will switch on the radio. The radio will scan for digital radio stations the first time that it’s turned on and subsequently return to the last listened to station. Don't use washing up liquid and hot water.
