LJ Ross is an internationally bestselling author, whose books have sold over 7 million copies worldwide. In the spirit of reconciliation, Audible acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. I already knew how this book would end but still, the way in which the drama built up, the way I got to reconnect with characters I already loved in brand new ways, I couldn't help but wish that the ending could be different. Favourite songs: 9 to 5 (Dolly Parton); Hold On (Wilson Phillips); Into the Groove (Madonna); What’s Love Got to Do With It (Tina Turner); Fly Me to the Moon (Frank Sinatra); We Didn’t Start the Fire (Billy Joel); American Woman (Lenny Kravitz). If you’re new to the DCI Ryan series this would be a good place to start to get to know the characters and the origins of the team.

I believe L J Ross wrote this further down the line as people wanted the full story/background on DCI Ryan and the early history of the team. She studied undergraduate and postgraduate Law at King’s College, University of London and then abroad in Paris and Florence. So many great performances, and I was thrilled to hear genuine North East actors and accents which, along with the music and sound effects, brought authenticity to the whole story. Having never listened to an audio book before I wasn’t sure what to expect, it took a wee while to get used to it but the narrator and actors who play Ryan and the rest of the characters are fantastic and the story flows smoothly. The set up was so interesting and the characters and performances especially the Northumberland accents grabbed my attention immediately so I sacrificed my slumbers and had to listen.More Hamburger icon An icon used to represent a menu that can be toggled by interacting with this icon.

This is very much a cat and mouse story and the tension builds the closer the police get to the killer. Murder and mystery are peppered with romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunnit, set amidst the spectacular Northumbrian landscape. We pay our respect to their elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.Anna Taylor, a former local girl is assigned to the case and arrives to help DCI Ryan try to solve the case. The story itself is addictive, and if I was reading this, I would pick this up and no way would I put it down until I finished it. If you have read the books you know how this investigation develops and how it ends, but this in no way effected my enjoyment of the book. As with most literary crime dramas, the DCI Ryan books are led by a tortured law enforcement operative.
