Description

The extent to which Japanese officials were aware of such atrocities during the Nanking Massacre has long been a matter of debate. For one, Japanese General Iwane Matsui, commander of the forces in China, claimed that he was unaware of mass crimes but nevertheless felt morally responsible. Things devolve, and Grey, Jason, Irina, and Svetlana get into deeper and deeper waters, until disaster strikes. Jeans, Roger B. (January 2005). "Victims or Victimizers? Museums, Textbooks, and the War Debate in Contemporary Japan". The Journal of Military History. Society for Military History. 69 (1): 149–195. doi: 10.1353/jmh.2005.0025. S2CID 159900111. An article describing "The Contest To Cut Down 100 People" — a brutal competition in which two Japanese soldiers challenged one another to massacre as many people as possible. The ONLY thing I'd say I didn't like was that this book is told in two timelines - the current one in Grey's POV and the one from the Massacre in Chongming's POV and the ones from the past could get a little bit boring (they were almost always the ones I would finish and put the book down saying I was done reading).

Anywhere in Tokyo you could be aware of the presence of the yakuza: the underground gangs who claimed to be descendants of the samurai tradition. They were some of the most feared and violent men in Asia. Sometimes it was just the sounds of the bosozoku motorcycle gangs that reminded you of their existence, like a chrome wave rolling down Meiji Dori at dead of night, sweeping everything in front of them, the characters for kamikaze painted on their helmets.” Born in Essex on 2 January 1962, Hayder grew up in Loughton as the daughter of John Bastin, an astrophysicist, and Susan Hollins, a teacher. [3] [5] She had a younger brother, Richard. [1] She left school and home for London shortly before her 16th birthday. Hayder was educated at The American University and Bath Spa University. She wrote that her book dealt with the "horror of the Japanese invasion of China," and that the caption reading "The Japanese rounded up thousands of women. Most were gang-raped or forced into military prostitution" contained two statements of indisputable fact. [47] David M. Kennedy (April 1998). "The Horror: Should the Japanese atrocities in Nanking be equated with the Nazi Holocaust?". The Atlantic Monthly. Vol.281, no.4. pp.110–116. I remember one occasion when, feeling rather like someone trying to talk BA Baracus into getting on a plane, I persuaded her to attend the World Mystery Convention in Baltimore where, predictably, she was the star of the show. Most of the time, however, she was content to let her books speak for her and preferred to spend time with her family. By the time I heard of her death, neither myself nor any other writer I know had seen her for many years.

The Devil of Nanking by Mo Hayder | Goodreads

He is a Chinese linguist hired by a Japanese university. He is a survivor of the 1937 slaughter of Nanking. He is the reason that Grey has come from London to Japan. She is chasing down a rumor that he has a short film that confirms and exposes the devastation perpetrated on the Chinese civilians by Japanese soldiers. Tokyo is another of Mo Hayder's deliciously chilling criminal outings, but probably won't produce the frisson of disapproval that such novels as Birdman and The Treatment did. The days are gone when Hayder was identified as one of a cadre of women writers who did something totally unacceptable: produce grisly crime novels quite as unsettling as the products of male imagination. People seem to have finally accepted that the tough crime novel needn't be an exclusively male preserve. The Treatment' ('De Behandeling'): Montreal Review". The Hollywood Reporter. 29 August 2014 . Retrieved 29 July 2021.He was pushing a wheelchair, in which sat a diminutive insectile man, fragile as an ageing iguana. His head was small, his skin as dry and crenulated as a walnut, and his nose was just a tiny isosceles, nothing more than two shady dabs for nostrils – like a skull’s. The wizened hands that poked out from his suit cuffs were long and brown and dry as dead leaves. The author does everything right. She builds suspense and tension. She writes beautifully. The characters are weird and memorable. There are plenty of surprises and strange reveals. Mo Hayder describes the two settings (Nanking before and during the 1936 Nanking massacre, in which the Japanese brutalized the Chinese civilians of the city) and contemporary Tokyo beautifully. The characters, settings, and events come to vivid life. The whole thing is memorably creepy. There's also plenty of erotic tension as Grey discovers her repressed sexuality. Wanted to give up halfway due to the borefest of characters, foreshadowing that's obvious to all but the MC (who just happened to excel in the tasks required of her, by the way) and convenient plot train.

She would joke that she was just antisocial, but the simple truth was that she was very shy and suffered from crippling stage fright. When she did make an appearance, though she was far from being an extrovert, she was always charming and vivacious and held her audience spellbound. I wouldn’t say I’ve exactly given up on thrillers. I used to read them by the wheelbarrow full, but have found them in recent years to be bloated, too influenced by CGI, and frankly unsatisfactory. Arah-Lynda sent me this book as a recommendation with a compelling wish that I would read it and review it. How could I possibly say no? By the way Arah-Lynda wrote this spectacular review of this book that everyone should read. Arah-Lynda review In reference to the photo that shows women and children walking across a bridge with Japanese soldiers, she wrote: When the Japanese Army reached Nanking, their brutality continued unabated. They burned down the city's walls, people's homes, the surrounding forests, and even whole villages situated in their path.

The Rape of Nanking. Penguin Books. ISBN 0-465-06835-9. Just decided to go for it because I honestly am still flipping through it daily to see if I can see anything new or figure out questions I've had - plus that writing is just beautiful!! booktuber από την οποία γνώρισα το βιβλίο, έτρεξα κατευθείαν να βρω πληροφορίες. San Francisco Chronicle staff writer Charles Burress wrote that Chang's quote of a secret telegram sent by Japan's foreign minister in 1938 was incorrectly cited as "compelling evidence" that Japanese troops killed at least 300,000 Chinese civilians in Nanjing. [13] According to Burress, the figure of 300,000 Chinese civilians killed actually came from a message sent by a British reporter, concerning deaths not only in Nanjing but in other places as well. Additionally, Burress questioned her motivation for writing the book—whether she wrote it as an activist or as a historian, stating that the book "draws its emotional impetus" from her conviction to not let the Nanjing Massacre be forgotten by the world. [13] Burress also cited Ikuhiko Hata, a Japanese history professor at Nihon University, who alleged that 11 photos in the book were misrepresented or fake. One particular photo shows women and children walking across a bridge with Japanese soldiers, and captioned as "The Japanese rounded up thousands of women. Most were gang-raped or forced into military prostitution." Hata stated that the photo originally appeared in 1937 in a Japanese newspaper as part of a series of photos that showed peaceful scenes of Chinese villagers under Japanese occupation. [13] He alleged that since she did not conduct research in Japan, she incorrectly portrayed Japan's postwar attitudes towards the atrocity. [13] In high school we are taught about many important events in our history classes; World War II, Pearl Harbor, the Civil Rights Movement, and The Great Depression, just to name a few. But not many of us, (in fact, no one I personally know,) was educated on the Nanking Massacre, also known as the Rape of Nanking.
