Momo's mother abandoned him with Madame Rosa, who is essentially a babysitter for the children of prostitutes. Mrs Woolf, wife of the manager, is a very celebrated author and, in her own way, more important than Galsworthy. I enjoyed lots of this book - Rose is a lovely lead, there's a good adventure, fun love stories and interesting family dynamics. I loved Rose’s back story about her family and upbringing (Iranian father and fair skinned blond mother). As the TV series progresses, parts of the book are cited, and additionally, one of the victims of the crime series left a clue in the book to the protagonist. It is stories like this that remind me of the magic of reading and finding connection across pages, characters, real lives, and all around the world! The young boy tells the story of his life in the orphanage and of his relationship with Madame Rosa as she becomes increasingly sick, culminating with her death, after she had expressed her desire to not die in hospital on life support, saying that she does not want to be a vegetable being forced to live.

In 1987, American director Harold Prince staged a short-lived musical version on Broadway under the title Roza with a libretto and lyrics by Julian More and music by Gilbert Becaud. It follows a complex family of daughters, and the story spans several generations, unveiling many secrets and scandals and a few twists too. The premise is fascinating but I found the story in itself quite depressing, all those years lost over a house – I’m not sure if I’m the only one who felt this way, it just seemed so sad and unnecessary. In la France profonde the signs are more exotic, as John Lewis-Stempel discovers one February morning when his horse crashes through an electrified fence and bolts into a walnut orchard.

The plot line was messy and the one time it got remotely away from Rose's inner anxiety spiral about everything from crazy family to walking down the street, the action was resolved mysteriously in a single chapter. Until an unwelcome reminder of home proves that finding herself will require more than a change of scenery. La Vie, According to Rose is described as “A heartfelt novel about self-discovery, grief, and a once-in-a-lifetime chance to start over. She’s written as the older wiser reliable sister, but once her feet touch French soil she turns into a simpering, naive, dolt.

This book is a celebration of the French lifestyle – an education in drinking to savour the moment, travelling indulgently, and cherishing food and culture. I would recommend this to everyone if you haven’t already read it, it’s an essential part of being actively anti-racist. Rose secretly hoped she might have a bit of fun and meet a charming man in Paris… and indeed she does!

An unexpected tale, and unlike anything I’ve ever read before, and a great book to start the year’s list off with. She finally has the courage to take her dream trip to Paris where she is still a doormat but eventually gains a bit of a spine and learns to do things for herself. A tricky one to get through at times, but one I’d recommend to anyone wishing to take on the subject of mental health.
