Just like my parents, I was keeping my skeletons in the closet because of shame and guilt. It was a harmful cycle, and one that had to be broken before it broke me forever. I love that Simone, just like many of us, have loved reading since she was young. She would read to escape her reality, like her mother and father yelling at all hours of the night. A. Seek help. Speak up about what is happening. There are so many people and organisations who can help you to escape to safety, to protect you and your children. It is NOT your fault. You deserve to be free from pain, stress, fear, and guilt. You deserve to feel safe and happy. Believe me when I reassure you from my own real life experience that your children will thrive once they are removed from the toxically abusive environment. Life is too short, so allow others to help you and your children to live your best lives.

This is honestly one of the most interesting memoirs I have ever read. In 'The Fate We Make' Simone recounts, not only hers, but her family's story. Each woman has their own story to tell and each one of them persevered through whatever life threw at them. I am in awe of these women and of Simone. They have been through so much...yet hope was never truly lost and I think that's such a beautiful message in itself.
