Set in Melbourne’s ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, it tells the tale of two friends who go to school together in the late 1990s but drift apart as adults. But as I read on, I noticed that it didn’t include much of Abomination, but talked a lot about Martha and Scott’s growing friendship.

Taunted and bullied at school, and lonely at home, with only postcards from her elder sister to keep her sane, Martha knows there has to be some other way of living. And yet it is Yonatan, who seems certain of his place initially, who struggles as the past intrudes on the present. The main issue in this book is a little girl named Martha grows up different then many other children and has a hard time making desicions not knowing right or wrong. This book is everything you want in a good novel, insight into a religion followed deeply by their believers. Ashley- An ‘Abomination’ in Judaism refers to a particular kind of sin, it’s used in the novel a few times, but it was only when I found the epigraph quote in Proverbs that I knew it would be my title because it perfectly encapsulates the experiences of both Ezra and Yonatan.I Finished this book because I'm on the lookout for a book To read with my students and this seemed like a good choice. One of the main characters is bullied and ostracised for being different - her family is strictly religious. The morals of family and religion are all discussed in an accessible manner and lead students to delve into their own moral compass. SOUTHCOTT – Yesterday a strict religious woman and her husband were arrested after a friend of their daughter reported them to the police, because of beating their daughter and rearing another child in a cage like an animal. Of course, there will be revisions down the line, but I try to get those three hundred as right as I can the first time around.

Once the story broke, school officials acted fast, cancelling classes and announcing Rabbi Hirsch’s immediate termination. They cautiously begin to rekindle a friendship at a time when both find themselves at a crossroads in their lives. Ultimately, it was a novel about connections and relationships and, to a certain extent, masculinity rather than one that focussed on the issue of child abuse and its suppression within the Orthodox Jewish community. The novel addresses themes so inherent to human beings such as faith and morality, making the book universal. Martha who is 12 is different from other kids —no TV, no computer, no cool clothes, and especially no friends. An intimate and refreshingly honest debut novel that follows the journey of two young men as they grabble with questions of faith, morality and identity. If I were fortunate enough to have a second book published, I think I would make sure I blocked out an appropriate amount of time in other areas of my life so that my focus wouldn’t be so divided. Notable reasons for recommending this book: There’s a multi narrative structure and a great final twist.

The problem was that the ending didn't feel right and seemed to move a million times quicker than the rest of the plot. She has volunteered as a docent at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County teaching the all- important lessons of the Holocaust and tolerance. Abomination is Martha's sister Mary's child, and so named because of the shame he inflicted upon the family being born out of wedlock. The only thing that let it down was the ending – the ‘concluding’ part of the story was extremely rushed and didn’t give the reader a lot of closure.

Yonatan, deeply embedded in the ultra-Orthodox community – he is now a teacher at the school he attended, and married to the rabbi’s daughter – has the furthest to fall. I think it’s hard for Martha, but she have to understand that our secret is a terrible secret and that she aren’t allowed to talks with anybody about that. Her father beats her with a cane and her mother tell her to be truthful but the family are covering up a huge lie.

Martha's sister Mary (referred to as Jezebel by her parents if they mention her at all) refuses to conform and was thrown out of their house at 16 years old. Yesterday she seriously ask her mother whether she is allowed to participate in the Hanglands Expedition to have some fun. I respect that Goldberg avoids most two-dimensional characterization—especially when it comes to his women characters! The story of Yonatan is a similar one, pushed not only by his reconnection with Ezra and a better understanding of the Hirsch case, but other life-changing realisations.
