I highly recommend this one, as I enjoyed learning about these beautiful creatures, and only wish that I had discovered it sooner! Community climate simulations to assess avoided impacts in 1.5 and 2 C futures. Earth System Dynamics, 8( 3), 827–847 Endangered and threatened wildlife and plants; 12‐month findings on petitions to list 25 species as endangered or threatened species. In the first book, I loved hearing about Veronica’s past. My favourite parts of the story were hers, and I enjoyed learning what happened in the past to make her such a formidable and independent character. Without these flashes to the past, the book just didn’t have the same impact. Projected continent‐wide declines of the emperor penguin under climate change. Nature Climate Change, 4( 8), 715–718. 10.1038/nclimate2280 So when Veronica and Daisy are invited to travel to the other side of the world together and visit the penguins of the southern hemisphere, they both jump at the chance. Effects of giant icebergs on two emperor penguin colonies in the Ross Sea, Antarctica. Antarctic Science, 19, 31–38. 10.1017/S0954102007000065 When she watches a television programme about Amelie Penguins, Veronica decides that she must make a journey to Antarctica to see them for herself. There was a lot more talk of environmental issues, especially surrounding the risk to penguins, which can be applauded. We learn about different species of penguins and the dangers they face every day due to human carelessness.

What does it mean to successfully conserve a (vertebrate) species? BioScience, 61( 1), 39–48. 10.1525/bio.2011.61.1.9 What ensues is an uplifting, heartwarming, entertaining story about Veronica’s time with the Penguins, especially the orphaned Penguin called Pip, that she insists they adopt, as another stipulation for funding! ❤️

Endangered and threatened wildlife and plants; threatened species status for meltwater Lednian Stonefly and Western Glacier Stonefly with a section 4 (d) rule. Federal Register, 84, 64210–64227. [ Google Scholar] Climate change is increasing the stress on species and ecosystems, and climate‐related local extinctions are already widespread (Wiens, 2016). Species extinction risk will accelerate with continued global warming, threatening 16%–30% of species under current climate policies (Román‐Palacios & Wiens, 2020; Urban, 2015). Rapid cuts in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to limit warming to 1.5°C under the international Paris Agreement, adopted by 195 parties in 2015, are by far the most important action for preventing catastrophic species losses (IPCC, 2018; Warren et al., 2018). In tandem, conservation actions can increase species’ resilience to climate stress including protecting important habitat, increasing habitat connectivity, and reducing non‐climate stressors (Heller & Zavaleta, 2009; Mawdsley et al., 2009).

If the frequency of extreme events is set to a constant historical frequency and affects only reproduction, on average across the five climate scenarios and six decades (2050−2100), the global population medians with extreme events decrease by ~12% relative to the median without extreme events. This percentage decrease is larger when the extreme events affect both reproduction and survival: 18%. For example, under the 1.5°C Scenario, by 2100, 170,000 breeding pairs are projected without extreme events, while 150,226 and 136,507 breeding pairs are projected if extreme events affect only reproduction, or both reproduction and survival respectively. A nursery area for the Antarctic silverfish Pleuragramma antarcticum at Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea): First estimate of distribution and abundance of eggs and larvae under the seasonal sea‐ice. Polar Biology, 35( 10), 1573–1585. 10.1007/s00300-012-1199-y Of course, one of the delights of the book is the penguins! Through Veronica’s eyes, we get to learn about penguin conservation, the research project, and what mischief baby penguins get up to. Really, they are utterly adorable. I loved the setting so much, and the scientists are sweet and smart, obsessed, and quite adorable too. She's a grumpy individual; she's self-absorbed, and oh my goodness, she's controlling. She has always exhibited these traits throughout her life. Now, at the age of 85, soon to turn 86 on the 21st of June, she has a mission to accomplish: to donate her considerable wealth to penguin research and locate her unknown and estranged grandson. A huge thank you to Berkley Publishing, Netgalley and Hazel Prior for sending me a free copy in exchange for an honest review I absolutely LOVED the way Hazel Prior included the penguin facts throughout - it was so much fun to learn about the little guys. Species protection will take more than rule reversal.
