Holyrood Distillery have created an elevated gin, distilled by a team of local whisky makers who are dedicated to shaping the spirit of tomorrow. The full bodied flavour profile, distinctive texture and mouth feel of Height of Arrows is evocative of a whisky experience and will appeal to more discerning gin drinkers. Despite the fact that pundits often say that the ‘ginaissance’ is on the wane, it seems that our thirst isn’t quenched, especially in Scotland. The Scottish Gin Awards have revealed gin brands which have successfully achieved medal status in 2022, following the awards dinner in Glasgow this month.

Their new offering, Height Of Arrows is a gin that has been created with whisky in mind. Drawing on the idea that whisky’s myriad of flavours rely on a handful of ingredients, Height Of Arrows rejects the idea of numerous botanical additions.Height of Arrows rejects the very idea of addition, instead focussing on the essential botanical that literally, defines the category – juniper, and how the experience of that one thing, can be maximised. Although it’s eveningtime, they’ve still got their lights on at St Leonard’s Lane, and they’re welcoming guests to try their new Height of Arrows Gin Tasting Experience. With such passion behind the products, it’s little surprise that Scottish gin is going from strength to strength. First celebrated on 3rd August 2019, International Scottish Gin Day was established in 2018 by The Gin Cooperative, which promotes the country’s gins. The results are highly regarded as they are independently audited by a panel of experts and judged live in a rigorously assessed blind-tasting event. Holyrood Distillery and Eden Mill tied in first place for the most amount of medals achieved with each of them taking home four medal positions. Holyrood continued their success with Gold in the Best Old Tom Gin category and a clean sweep in the Best Cask Gin category. It’s clear that Scotland’s distillers are aiming to make their gins as well known as their whiskies in the global spirits scene. They may have some catching up to do, but they’re on the right path. As Ravenhall puts it: ‘We have stepped out from behind Scotch whisky and brought a fresh perspective to stories that are anchored in Scottish provenance.’

Story.

When it comes to accommodation in Scotland, there's a fantastic choice of amazing stays from luxury hotels to glamping getaways. Our guide also covers the uses of juniper, which has been paired with alcohol for millennia, mainly for various spurious health reasons, as well as the reputation and origins of gin or ‘mother’s ruin’. Over 300 guests from the Scottish drinks industry joined to celebrate achievements, which included the announcement of the winner of the top award of the night, Scottish Gin Distillery of the Year 2022.

Inspired by the Picts, a tribe thought to be some of the earliest settlers in Scotland, this is a complex gin. It’s distilled with 16 botanicals, including damask rose, pomelo, bourbon vetiver, honey, kaffir lime, chamomile, cardamom and oolong tea, which lends a creamy gold tint to the colour. Floral notes and citrus freshness on the nose, with more florals on the palate – especially lavender – mingling with ginger spice and a lifted herbal character. Lingering honeyed sweetness balanced by pink pepper and dried ginger spice on the finish. Savour it in a distinctive Martini. Alc 43% On this tour, you enter through the bright gift shop, before heading to the upper level of the 19th century building, which was once a railway goods shed. Mirroring this approach, the aim was to create a gin with a complex array of flavours by utlising a minimal number of ingredients. As a result, Height of Arrows was designed to celebrate gin’s ‘hero’ botanical – juniper. The results are highly regarded as they are independently audited by a panel of experts and judged live in a rigorously assessed blind tasting event. brewing past and distilling present, are all explored by the team through experimental methods and collaborative projects. Holyrood Distillery is in turn at the heart of Edinburgh’s discerning drinking scene. Over 300 guests from the Scottish drinks industry joined to celebrate achievements in Glasgow on Thursday night with Edinburgh's gin makers – established and new – taking home a lion share of the prizes. Apparently, the summit was the furthest reach that an archer could shoot a bow. Hopefully theydidn’t hit one of the tourists at the top. This beautifully rounded Martini gin is made by Holyrood Distillery in Edinburgh. Inspired by the simplicity of whisky production, juniper is the focus here. Isle of Skye sea salt is added after distillation to amplify the flavour, along with natural beeswax for texture. Very creamy and smooth, with distinctively bright juniper aromas, it makes a superlative Gibson Martini. Alc 43%
