There's one thing that is always lingering in the far corner of this story, and that is hope, perhaps that one thing that can save us when it feels like life has shut down on all the choices. Apple and Rain will show you how a little bit of hope can get you a long way. Among the glittering surfaces and intrigues of her new life in Copenhagen, Marit begins to investigate her father's death. But every step closer to the truth brings more danger and soon she is caught in a deception that goes all the way up to the king. Magic may be the only thing that can save her – if it doesn't kill her first. Show book I read Sarah Crossan's One not that long ago and I was really impressed by both the prose (the whole book is written in verse) and the story itself. So when I was looking for something good after a few disappointing reads, I remembered I had a copy of Apple And Rain waiting for me on my shelves. I started reading it expecting it to be similar to One, and that is probably part of the reason why I didn't enjoy it that much. Rather than a full story written in verse, Apple And Rain is a story about poetry with only a few poems incorporated in the text. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I wasn't particularly impressed by the story itself. I did like the poems, but the plot, prose and characters are not exactly inspiring. I understand the main character Apple is quite young and that explains part of the 'childish feel' of the book, but I can't say I liked her and most of the plot is a bit farfetched. Rain with her doll, Apple's mother, Apple herself... I just didn't feel it. I know other people seemed to enjoy Apple And Rain though, so don't let this review discourage you if you think you would enjoy it.

Apple and Rain: : Sarah Crossan: Bloomsbury YA

Like a brilliant hybrid of Cathy Cassidy and Jacqueline Wilson, Sarah Crossan entices you into her world, then tells a moving, perceptive and beautifully crafted story which has the power to make you laugh and cry. About This Edition ISBN:Sarah Crossan's poetic novella The Weight of Water was shortlisted for the Carnegie medal. Poetry remains integral to the writing here, personified in a tremendous teacher, Mr Gaydon. Apple's poems are showered throughout the prose making it a more accessible novel to those reluctant to reading verse. Apple is an endearing character and her internal struggle to feel any resentment towards the disappointing mother she'd been craving for so long is sincere and believable. The book follows Apple Apostolopoulou (real name Apollinia, which is apparently greek, so not so stupid after all). She’s 13 and lives with her Nan since her mum disappeared when she was 2 and her dad seems generally unwilling to be her parent. I think we're all familiar with the concept that beauty is simplicity, and I certainly think that this book right here, fits the description perfectly. Apple and Rain does not have a complex premise full of twists, turns and unpredictable sequences. The writing was poetic, but not overly so. It was simple, but pleasant, seamless and fully capable of guiding the reader towards the core of the story.

Poetry can be great to broaden reading horizons, as well as truly engaging for reluctant readers. Here are some poetry books your teenager is sure to love and want to read out loud. I have read all of Sarah Crossans novels and this was hands down her best work (in my opinion). It's not one of those typical soppy love stories. It's a tale of learning to love and just dealing with being a teenager. It made me laugh and cry. Overall it is THE best book I've ever read. Conjoined twins Daisy and Violet Hilton who became famous show performers in the 1930s. Unlike any of her other novels to date, Sarah Crossan spent a lot of time researching historical and contemporary conjoined twins for her novel One. The issue with Apple’s Nan is that she is overprotective, basically treats Apple like she’s about 8 which is, understandably, frustrating. Apple, however, very much to her credit, doesn’t make too much of a fuss about it, although she does express annoyance over it. She graduated with a degree in Philosophy and Literature before training as an English and Drama teacher at Cambridge University and worked to promote creative writing in schools before leaving teaching to write full time. Whilst Apple and Rain was not a favourite of mine, I’m quite glad I read it because it’s a little different to the books I usually read, and it made me step outside of my reading comfort zone.

Our main character, Apple, was mature in some ways, but she was incredibly naïve and irresponsible in others. She hurts people with her careless attitude and does some pretty stupid things to impress her long-lost mother. But I guess this had me hoping that she would learn from the mistakes she made, and grow because of them. Not all Apple Watch bands are appropriate for water use. I didn't care when Rain was introduced, whereas if it had been written differently I probably would have. Nana, Donna and Mr Gaydon too, were moderately very stereotypical.
