Description

The company behind Kirk and Sweeney are 3 Badge Beverage Company from California. Kirk and Sweeney is named after a wooden schooner. This schooner, Kirk and Sweeney, was a rum running vessel which brought rum from the Caribbean to the Northeast Coast during Prohibition. The ship was captured off the coast of New York in 1924. An enormous cargo of rum was found aboard. On the palate, the flavors are sweeter and more intense, with pronounced butterscotch and vanilla notes. There are tropical fruit notes of pineapple, mango and melon, along with a hint of dried apricot and raisin. The coffee and milk chocolate notes are also evident, along with cinnamon and nutmeg and just a hint of oak. The rum is satiny smooth, with a noticeable palate weight.

Dominican rum is a light Spanish style of rum – they are usually “sweetened” in some way and are presented and marketed as smooth and easy drinking or as premium rum to be paired with a cigar. These are all excellent rums, incredibly well priced and offer outstanding value. Both the 18 YO and 23 YO make excellent sipping rums. The 18 YO seems more intensely flavored to me, while the 23 YO is smoother, with a more subtle and nuanced complexity. If you are a rum drinker, both of these would be excellent additions to your bar. If you are new to rum, or if you find many molasses based rums to intense, then these expressions are an excellent alternative and a good place to start. Kirk and Sweeney Dominican Rum 12 Year. Kirk and Sweeney is an American rum “brand”. As well as having this rum their range also consists of a 18 year and 23 year old rum.

In the glass Kirk and Sweeney 12 Year is a mahogany coloured spirit – as it is made in such volume I have no doubt it will be coloured to remain consistent. On the palate, the rum is drier, although it still retains some of the dried fruit sweetness of its younger siblings. There are the expected flavors of butterscotch and vanilla, dried tropical fruits and a mild pepperiness, along with spice notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and some clove. There is a lot of this kind of rum about. Dominican Rum producers such as Brugal, Bermudez and Barceló all output a lot of product as do the bottler Oliver&Oliver under various different brands names.

The stated ages on Kirk and Sweeney rums are in accordance with Dominican Republic rules. In response to ever changing regulations in markets where the rum is sold, the company is going to transition its core range to non-age reserve statements. It’s expressions are blends of variously aged rums.Kirk and Sweeney, is imported by the 3 Badge Beverage headquartered in Sonoma California. 3 Badge is owned and run by f ourth generation vintner August Sebastiani, a member of one of California’s legendary wine producing families, the Sebastiani. There are some milk chocolate and coffee notes, along with tropical spices of cinnamon and a bit of clove. The finish is medium length, sweet with notes of butterscotch and vanilla and a mild lingering pepperiness. The rum is aged in new American oak barrels. The color is a rich dark amber. On the nose, it seems drier, with the expected butterscotch, vanilla, floral and dried fruit aromas, along with a distinct pepperiness. In the case of a 23 YO Dominican rum, for example, at least 51% of the rum would need to be 23 years old, the other 49% can also be 23 YO or it can be a blend that consists of a mix of rums whose average age is 23 YO.
