Final verdict: LITTLE RED is a simple recounting of the fairytale with a touch of horror/scary that is great for less sensitive readers before Halloween. Little Red is a children’s picture book, adapted from the classic Little Red Riding Hood tale with my own text and illustrations. Little Red is on his way to visit his grandmother on the other side of the wood. Ignoring all warnings of wolves in the wood, he removes his coat and strays from the path. That s when the greedy wolf, lurking in the wood, hatches an evil plan. He steals the little boy's red coat and hurries to the cottage to gobble up Little Red s shortsighted grandmother. And Little Red is next on the menu! But can a keg of delicious sparkling ginger beer save him from a gruesome end? With settings from the fabulously quirky 'Ye Olde Belch' Inn to grandmother's eerie old cottage, this witty reworking of the classic tale is perfectly adapted to 18th-century England and is bursting with period detail. Other titles in the series: Cinderella and Rapunzel. Text Rationale: A perfectly charming retelling of the classic tale, with plenty of side-eye. This version dispenses with all the details, none of that nonsense about not being able to leave the path, and there's no suspense when she meets the wolf in granny's clothing. Red cuts straight to the chase. She's got a plan.

A bold (both graphically and narratively) reimagining of the classic fairy tale, Little Red is truly subversive in that it subverts the concept of victimhood with a deliciously dark twist. Huffington Post On the way to visit her grandmother, Little Red Riding Hood meets a big bad wolf in the forest. Although some children may find this encounter frightening, Little Red is a feisty young girl and is not at all intimidated, so continues on her way.Advice I would give to an aspiring illustrator would be to not judge your own work too early, it could be something beautiful! I try to nurture an idea as much as I can before I show others. Receiving critiques from your peers is vital in the creative process, but if you or others judge an idea before it has bloomed you might start to doubt something that could have been amazing. If you persevere, it might pay off! Growing up, we all loved fairy tales. Often the story was scary, or the woman needed some help to make things work for her. Betha Woollvin wrote these two books with a twist and there was no scary part or the characters can save themselves. To keep experimenting with your creativity, using different mediums and platforms, especially whilst you’re still at university! I was at university whilst I was working on Little Red, so I guess going to lectures and seminars were a bit of a distraction – but in a good way!
Also group critiques were a large part of my studio time at university but they were also helpful in refining my story. There was no commission as such, the book began life as a project in the second year of my illustration degree. A very broad brief was handed to us, simply to make a book of any kind. I decided to use this opportunity to experiment with illustrating for children, and with narrative illustration.

My favourite thing about working with two hoots and Macmillan has definitely been my free range to be able to write and illustrate how I please. Little Red has been tidied up in the sense of illustrations and text but the story and the compositional ideas are the same as they were two years ago in my dummy book. They never diluted my humour or asked me to change my characters, they loved Little Red the way it was and have always supported my creative process. I started Little Red whilst I was at university in my second year of my BA in illustration. The class were given a project to create a book in six weeks – that was it, a very open brief. Quite a few people in our class decided to give our brief a bit more structure by taking the opportunity to base it around a live brief or a competition. This is when I heard about the Macmillan prize for illustration.Access-restricted-item true Addeddate 2022-01-01 14:01:16 Boxid IA40279017 Camera USB PTP Class Camera Collection_set printdisabled External-identifier Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical Moments In total, it’s been about two years! Home > What left me wanting more: This book is a bit scary and should not be read to sensitive children. The wolf is shown eating the grandmother, and he is definitely a scary presence throughout. Little Red is also shown wearing the wolf's pelt at the end, which may also be challenging for sensitive animal lovers. This is definitely a dark story, and it would be better for children who enjoy a touch of the dark in their fairytales. This rendition of Little Red Riding Hood is a little disturbing (not that the original isn't!). The Red-is-victorious outcome common in most modern retellings of the story has a slight twist in this version. I wasn't the biggest fan, but I can see some kids really enjoying this one. Bethan Woollvin's version [of Little Red Riding Hood] has a far darker ending - and I loved it. The talented illustrator and writer has taken a childhood niggle as her premise for this bold feminist version of the story: would our caped heroine really have been taken in by a wolf in a bad grandma disguise? . . . I won't spoil the ending but let's just say Little Red wraps it up nicely (and warmly) and it has my three year old son thrilled at every read, begging for more.

I was first introduced to this book a couple months ago, in my picturebook class. We looked at the shapes, the colors, how we moved from verso to recto along with the book. For those picturebook nerds like me, this is a great example of Molly Bang's ten rules and why they work. Eager to discover whether the prince rescues the slumbering princess, Ella Bella waits for the other children to leave and then opens Madame Rosa’s enchanted musical box. This simple book will appeal to the squirmiest young children, but it might be a bit too gruesome for the more sensitive child. The action takes place off-screen, but you see Red holding an axe, and then you see Red wearing the wolf's skin, and granny waving good-bye from her front door, so it's pretty clear that Red killed the wolf with an axe and released her grandmother from the wolf's stomach. Some kids will LOVE that twist. This is a beautiful read and the illustrations are gorgeous. Unlike the traditional tale where the girl was saved by a woodcutter, here the little girl thinks no wolf should harm any kid. This is a very thoughtful and insightful story and I liked this ending better than the traditional tale. This type of tale will empower any gender and any child can think they can be brave and can stand for themselves.

On reflection the project has exceeded all expectations and intentions. I only decided to create a children’s book as an experiment at university, and it went on to win the Macmillan Childrens Book Competition, amongst other wonderful recognitions! It feels very strange because I didn’t think it would ever leave my sketch book, let alone become published… Daily Mail This is my book of the year so far . . . Woollvin is a striking new talent with strong retro style illustrations and a simple, witty text. The classic tale of the two children abandoned in the forest, and their frightening encounter encounter with an evil witch, has lost none of its popularity over the years.
