Sir Robert’s father is Henry Carey, Lord Hunsdon, generally believed to be the bastard son of Henry VIII and Mary Boleyn, making him a powerful first cousin to Queen Elizabeth. A Murder of Crows was an enjoyable read, revolving around a British ecologist’s efforts to extricate herself from suspicion of murder. I loved that it switched between all the various viewpoints because it gives the reader a chance to understand the motivations and mindsets of each of the characters, which were each complicated and intense. The writing is incredible, really allowing you to feel what the characters were feeling - like Alice, who has dementia. You could feel her confusion and frustration very clearly. The fish—true fish, at any rate—are the easiest to classify. They come in schools. No, not that school: this particular word comes from a Middle Dutch word that refers to a group of animals together. Fish also come in shoals, which comes from an Old English word that means "multitudes." If it's a group of one type of aquatic mammal—whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals—then they tend to gather in pods. For instance, the number of dastardly sounding nouns for crows, such as murder, mob and horde, probably come from medieval peasants’ fears that the sinister-looking corvids had been sent by the Devil or were witches in disguise.

This was a fantastic & FUN little detective romp & Ahhh I am SO for LGBTQIA+ rep & LETHAL LIT—killers based on literature? Um what could make a freaking true crime podcast owning MC based novel cooler?! NOTHING! Books in Books For Life ✌🏻I really didn't enjoy the format of the novel as it's extremely choppy and some of it irrelevant to the main thrust of the plot. Each chapter is a third person narrative from a different point of view which I find distracting and prevents me from getting fully involved, just as I get settled into one character the viewpoint changes and I have to adjust. The plot which can get hidden in all this swapping is interesting and well thought out but the clever ending is extremely unsatisfactory with nothing tied up in a nice bow. I think that this novel is a bit literary for me. I like a nice straightforward police procedural and this is anything but. THE AUTHOR: After spending sixteen years as an ecologist, crawling through undergrowth and studying nocturnal habits of animals (and people), Dr Sarah Yarwood-Lovett naturally turned her mind to murder. She may have swapped badgers for bears when she emigrated from a quaint village in the South Downs to the wild mountains of the Pacific Northwest, but her books remain firmly rooted in the rolling downland she grew up in. If you are allergic to love triangles, you may develop a rash while reading this book, as Nell also has a flirtatious relationship with a coworker. Peeking ahead at the description of book two, it seems that will resolve soon, so I wouldn't necessarily worry too much about it, but perhaps it's better to be forewarned. A minor complaint is that the crows promised in the title don't appear in the novel. Although not original, the title and book description looked interesting enough for me to grab a copy.

This was my first read by Ian. I saw him read an extract at Noir at the Bar in Edinburgh and knew I had to get the book. A young couple disappear in a torrential thunderstorm. They are on the way to meet his mother.DISCLOSURE: Thank you to Embla Books via Netgalley for providing a digital ARC of A Murder of Crows by Sarah Yarwood-Lovett for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions. As I said the characters are all oddballs. Most of them are well drawn and as the novel progresses explanations for their behaviour are slowly revealed but it's all a bit OTT in the one novel.

This was a fun and engaging little mystery. Some of my enjoyment may have derived from the contrast with my previous read, which was long and tedious, but I have already placed a hold on the next in this series at the library. There were several factors that influenced me to choose this book: it is advertised as “perfect for those who loved Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club.” I'm uncertain what the connection between the two is, but I did really enjoy both of them. Secondly, the main character is an ecologist and there is a lot of natural history detail, which I always enjoy. And, of course, the title which featured crows attracted the birder in me. It was a good read in a novel where we appeared to have two good 'guys'. The first was Nell the ecologist with much to keep secret and the other was James a Detective Sergeant who was given his first lead in a murder case for which Nell was prime suspect. To further complicate matters was there a spark of something between them? Tig Torres investigates Hollow Falls' horrific history in this original novel based on the hit podcast Lethal Lit from Einhorn's Epic Productions and iHeartRadio! I listened to Ian Skewis narrate this book which I think certainly added to the experience. His mellifluous Scottish voice is perfectly suited to a tale set on the west coast of Scotland.

Nell finds herself treated as both a witness and potential suspect by the Major Crime Team at Pendlebury, led by DCI Val Johnson and DS James Clark. Their suspicions grow when they learn that Nell has been hiding a major part of her identity, and that she has a past link to the victim. Meanwhile, Nell is navigating both a flirtatious relationship with her colleague Dr. Adam Kashyap and her growing mutual attraction to DS Clark. Desperate to clear her name, Nell uncovers irregularities within the development Sophie and her husband had proposed for Manor House Farm, indicating a potential motive, but the alternate suspect has an iron-clad alibi. Can Nell draw on her knowledge of ecology to find the missing link and solve Sophie's murder? Filming began in December 1997, across Key West, Florida, Los Angeles, California, and New Orleans, Louisiana. It has been released on DVD. A murmuration of starlings shapes the sky at dusk, near the town of Gretna in the south of Scotland. I thoroughly enjoyed the scenes on the Jennings's farm. The father and son were portrayed clearly and with understanding.
