Description

They tell GRT children that their stories and histories are of genuine interest and they can be proud of them. They validate these children and their experiences - but they also enrich the experiences of all children.

Read this book for interviews with three generations of the Cordona family for a rich anecdotal insight into the long history and heritage of showfamilies. The text perhaps relies too heavily on existing publications by key scholars, some of which are relatively dated and fails to engage fully with more recent historiographies of Romani peoples. Indeed Roma scholars in Eastern Europe are engaged in both deconstructing historical narratives of their own people and accessing first-hand 'hidden narratives' by dint of empathic shared histories. That said, this book is highly suitable for the general reader and students alike, who require a clear grasp of the post-Enlightenment spread of nationalism and the impacts of changing political regimes on populations who are outside normative constructions of the 'good citizen'. A resource designed to support all those working in the Catholic educational sector to help challenge the stigmas faced by Gypsy, Roma and Traveller pupils and their wider communities. Mikey Walsh has an amazing story to tell of his childhood among an English Roma family. His story is full of colorful characters, adventures, and horrific physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. It was fascinating to me to read an insider's view of a lifestyle so very different from my own. I very much enjoyed reading the book. Jameson, Greg (16 July 2011). EF speak to bestselling author Mikey Walsh about his incredible childhood memoirsBut they live well. Nice caravans and cars and spend a fortune on their daughters' weddings. Where do they get the money? The book and the tv shows have made it plain they pay no tax. They themselves make no bones about their sexism and utter contempt towards 'gorgios' (non-gypsies), so they are racist too. Written by a Romani author, this story depicts the struggle between tradition and following your own passions.
