With funding from a variety of donors, including the Estée Lauder Companies Charitable Foundation, Jerry and Thao Dodson, the Merali Foundation, Lana Condor, the RYTHM Foundation, and the Mark and Thuy Barnett Foundation, The Asia Foundation’s scholarship programs in Vietnam support girls from disadvantaged and low-income families. The girls are selected from six regions to attend secondary school through graduation, to build key life and leadership skills, and to enter university, where many pursue traditionally male-dominated STEM fields. Our education programs are distinguished by the locally grounded, personalized support we provide to each of our young scholars. With the refrain, "Girls are amazing. So shout it out loud- I'm a girl! I'm fantastic! I'm strong, brave, and proud!", this is a wonderful book to emphasize how girls can be anything and do anything. A really fun book about all the things a girl can do like be an astronaut, help animals as a veterinarian, be a firefighter or a jungle explorer, anything! The possibilities are endless when you're a girl, and this teaches kids that doing things "like a girl" is no insult. Malala Yuousafzai captured the attention of the world when she came to the UK for medical care following an assassination attempt in Pakistan when she was just 15 years old. This was no random shooting. Malala had been speaking out about life under Taliban rule since she was eleven years old. She wrote a blog under a pseudonym and was featured a New York Times documentary in 2010. She gave interviews and speeches in print and on television and was nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize. Girls come in all different colours and sizes. They delight and amaze us. They're full of surprises. Girls can do anything they want to do. And if you are a girl, you can do these things too."

Now a senior Samoan nurse in Australia, I've had to reflect on how i got here as a professional. And this poster contributed to my subconscious belief that as a girl, I could do anything. I saw this poster at my Primary School St Anne's Newtown everyday in the classroom corridor. It registered in my subconscious and formed the belief of it. Goes to show about the power of media in a non threatening manner. I really liked the diversity represented in this book. Each girl is unique from hair type to skin color to interests to different ability levels. For example, there is a girl in a wheelchair and a girl with a prosthetic leg. Girls with long hair, girls with short hair, a girl with no hair. The illustrations work as a great way to explore the message that everyone in the world is different. Whatever they decide to be in life, girls can do anything great. It's all a matter of attitude and proposing it with a lot of self-esteem and positive energy! With beautiful illustrations that also remind us of some of the most successful women in the world in different professions! Highly recommended! Girlguiding is a UK charity for girls and young women, who believe in helping all girls know they can do anything. They offer Rainbows for 4-7 year olds, Brownies for 7-10 year olds, Guides for 10-14 year olds and Rangers for 14-18 year olds. Karen’s time with Girlguiding began when she was a girl herself.

There is still a long way to go, but I have seen so many girls with the right support fulfill their potential and embark on a life-changing path. I am so proud to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Michelle Obama and the Girls Opportunity Alliance to bring more visibility to the need to educate girls everywhere. Another example of the impact of this support is Ha Thi Anh, one of just two female students in the department of civil and industrial construction at the National University of Civil Engineering. Once a shy student from a rural province, Ha Anh is now a confident and accomplished student. She enthusiastically participates in all program activities—including soft-skills training workshops, supplementary English lessons, and volunteer activities. In any activity, she always plays a leadership role by gathering and organizing her peers. In her, we find an abundant source of energy and an intense desire to rise. She regards her family’s situation not as a fault, but as a motivation to achieve her goals. She works part time as a tutor to help cover the cost of living in Hanoi. She cultivates her English capabilities in any way possible and seeks advice from senior students and friends in her major. She explores opportunities for study abroad and many other previously unimaginable things, with the hope of a brighter future and supporting her parents. Helping young children to recognise that everyone can follow their own dreams and be a great friend! In 2013 women in managerial roles tended to be concentrated in female-dominated industries like nursing, teaching, and childcare. We know that girls face pressures and expectations in every area of their lives. They’re limited by gender stereotypes, and they can face barriers to accessing the things they need to be happy.

But we know that Girlguiding can help change this. It’s a chance to focus on our core mission to be here for all girls – enabling them to discover the best in themselves and make a positive difference in their community. An astronaut of course! Yes, but you won’t ever become an astronaut. Or a professional footballer or a famous YouTuber or a film star or a pop star. At least, that’s what hundreds of children will hear from adults they trust. They will be told that their dreams are not for them. That they are not good enough to achieve those dreams. That these are things other people do. But if we tell them this, then we are crushing their ambition and robbing them of the drive that could actually propel them to become those things they dream of. Or, of becoming something else that they want to do more. The Girls Can Do Anything is all about girl power and breaking gender stereotypes. Through bright-coloured and cheerful illustration, the book shows the limitless possibilities on what girls can do and be. At the end of the book, You can find some portraits of real-life women and their professions as inspiration. It's also a great book to discuss about jobs and professions. Award-winning author Caryl Hart discusses the lives and achievements of five women who have inspired her. Girls Can Do Anything is a celebration of all the different things girls can do. Of course, everyone can do these things regardless of their gender identity! But this exuberant, rhyming book makes it crystal clear that these things are ALL available to girls as well! She was shot in the head, alongside two other girls, while on a school bus. Amazingly, she survived and was brought to the UK for further treatment following life-saving surgery in Peshawar. Since then, she has continued to speak out about the right to education and is the youngest person to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014, aged just 17. Through Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers, we support girls to laugh, learn, explore and have adventures. This was achieved by promoting women into apprenticeships. In late 1985 over 300 women had taken up apprenticeships in non-traditional jobs. 1980s By 1981 one-third of married women were in full-time employment, nearly twice the proportion in 1961. Women continued to dominate professions such as nursing and primary teaching, but by 1981 they also accounted for a fifth of lawyers and doctors, compared to 3% a generation earlier. Though separate pay scales for men and women had been abolished in 1972, in 1985 women were still paid 22% less per hour than men. In 1980 the New Zealand Federation of Labour adopted the Working Women’s Charter, sometimes called a ‘bill of rights’ for working women. By the mid-1980s the government’s Employment and Vocational Guidance Service was actively promoting the catch-cry, 'Girls Can Do Anything ’.
