By the end of your first stage of labor, your cervix should be about ten centimeters wide, and you’ll probably feel the urge to push. Your body is telling you that it’s time to deliver this baby! Fill the peri bottle with warm water. You may also use cool water for soothing if that feels better for you. Sometimes, especially if this is your first labor or your baby is bigger than average, the perineum can tear naturally during childbirth. Other times, if your baby is struggling to make it through the birth canal, the doctor can perform an episiotomy — an intentional incision in the perineum, to ensure delivery continues to progress safely (1). Surprisingly, it’s better to tear than to be cut, as it’s easier for the perineum to heal naturally after tearing. As we mentioned, a peri bottle is like a portable bidet, and it has many benefits for new mums experiencing postpartum pain and perineal tearing. After giving birth, new parents will often experience perineal pain as well as soreness, bleeding and discharge. However, most postpartum people use a peri bottle for about a week after giving birth, when the vagina is still tender and sore. You may want to continue using a peri bottle after the first week or perhaps until the postpartum bleeding stops.

There are a handful of other items that can be used alongside Kin's Peri Bottle that will help make the postpartum experience easier, especially when it comes to using the toilet. Kin's Sitz Tub helps to relieve your tender and sensitive bits after birth. When combined with our specially formulated Sitz Salts, the Sitz Bath helps relieve constipation, shrink haemorrhoids and reduce perineal swelling. A stool softener is also helpful at this time as it makes bowel movements easier and puts less stress on the perineum with straining. This is especially helpful if you have haemorrhoids. You may also find sitting on a pillow more comfortable as well. You will also experience the same bleeding as those who had a vaginal birth and the peri bottle is great for managing this scenario. Plus, you can also use a peri bottle to clean your incision to avoid the wound becoming infected. There is no hard and fast rule for how long you should use a peri bottle but most women find they only need to use one for about a week. Continue using your peri bottle for as long as you feel it is helping you during the postpartum period.Popular in the United States where many hospitals actually provide new mums with peri bottles, the idea is you squirt warm water both during and after urination to relieve the stinging and keep your healing perineum clean. Sometimes referred to as ‘perineal irrigation’, using a special bottle is easier and more convenient than pouring warm water using a jug and gentler than using a shower head. If you’ve had a vaginal delivery, it is normal for your perineum – the area between your vulva and anus – to feel sore and swollen. You might have experienced a perineal tear or been given an episiotomy so your midwife or doctor may have stitched your skin up to help it heal and repair. The first few days after your baby was born, your perineum may still feel sore and swollen if you had lengthy labor before having a cesarean section. You will experience the same heavy postpartum bleeding as women who gave birth vaginally, so you might want to use a peri bottle to keep the area clean, particularly if bending down hurts. It’s not surprising then that going for your first wee after giving birth can cause an uncomfortable stinging or burning sensation. And some new mums swear by using a peri bottle to soothe their perineum and help it to heal. What is a peri bottle? Even if your perineum doesn’t tear during childbirth, it will still be sore and swollen for a few days after delivery. If you did have some tearing or lacerations, it could be painful for several weeks.

A peri bottle is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to regularly clean the perineal area. They are small and super easy to use. This makes them perfect for throwing in your purse once you feel like getting out of the house — helping you avoid discomfort when using the bathroom in public. The water dilutes the urine, which lessens the stinging sensation some women experience. After you’re done, you might want to gently pat the area dry using toilet paper rather than wiping, as this will irritate your skin. It is entirely up to you whether or not to use a peri bottle, regardless of how you gave birth. In our book, anything that might help you feel a little more at ease during those exhausting first few days as a parent is a success. Things To Put In A Peri Bottle After Birth You will also bleed for up to six weeks after your baby was born. This discharge – known as lochia – can be quite heavy initially as your uterus is shedding its lining. This sounds painful, and it is. However, woman to woman, some form of perineal tearing happens to most of us during childbirth, so it’s probably something you should prepare for. How a Peri Bottle Can Help

No matter how you gave birth, whether you choose to use a peri bottle or not is completely up to you. Anything that might make you feel a little more comfortable in those first few exhausting days of parenthood is a winner in our books. What do I put in a peri bottle? As you start to push, your baby will move into your vagina and begin to “crown” — exiting your body head first (hopefully!) into the world. Although babies are small, your perineal area will still need to stretch significantly to allow your baby’s body to pass through. This is what the perineum is made to do. Instead of using paper to wipe, squirt warm water from the peri bottle to clean the vulva and perineum and then gently pat dry with toilet paper. Avoid wiping where possible. Passing gas or doing a number two can be difficult and straining will likely aggravate your incision and sore abdomen, so a peri bottle can come in handy here. Although peri bottles are more commonly used in the United States, they are becoming much more popular here too and you can buy them in a number of places both in store and online.

Childbirth is usually divided into three different stages: the labor stage (divided into latent, active labor, and transition), the delivery of the infant, and the passage of the placenta. During the second phase, while the baby crowns, your perineum may tear. Let me assure you, although the hospital peri bottle will work OK, it’s not the only design on the market or the best. Our team of moms has experienced childbirth many times amongst us, and we’ve searched for the best peri bottles to make the experience as clean, safe, and convenient as possible.
