Reflection is a cyclical process: experience, analysis, implement, repeat. You can incorporate the changes into future deliveries, or into the design of new activities. The changes you identify are very rarely so specific that the learnings cannot be applied elsewhere. Having someone who conveys such similar challenges as my own was quite helpful, both in terms of knowing that my concerns are common, but also by providing practical ways to reflect in different ways and take actions to develop my teaching even further. This is the second Brookfield book that I have read, after starting with his revised edition of The Skillful Teacher (2015). To uncover our assumptions “we need to be able to see ourselves from unfamiliar angles” (Brookfield, 2017, p. 61). Brookfield devotes the largest part of the book to explaining how teachers can practice critical reflection using the four lenses: students’ eyes, colleagues’ perceptions, personal experience, and theory. In these chapters advisors will find strategies and practices they may implement into their advising approach to critically reflect on advising.
