Blood Brothers started life as a play touring UK schools written by Willy Russell. Russell later adapted the play with music he had written. Willy Russell’s other plays include Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine. Bruce Springsteen wrote BLOOD BROTHERS in early 1995 in celebration of the brief reunion of the E Street Band — he had disbanded the band in 1989. In the liner notes of his 1995 Greatest Hits album, Springsteen simply wrote, "It was good to see the guys." In 1988 the musical was revived in the West End, opening at the Albery Theatre and then the Phoenix, running for twenty four years, becoming one of the longest-running musicals in West End history.
