Making A Cast When it comes to making a cast from rigid or flexible moulds, Fine Casting or Artists' plaster is usually quite sufficient if the finished work is unlikely to be handled much. A typical plaster for more portable objects is Herculite No.2, but Crystacal R should be used if true whiteness is important. For maximum hardness use Crystacast or, for the best resistance to breakage, use Cassini's or Jesmonite. Depending on the casting material, soft soap or other parting agent can be used to seal the mould surfaces. Moulds must be completely dry if used for casting metals because the steam from trapped moisture can cause molten metal to be blown out - the mould may need drying in a low oven before use (not a microwave!). Any under-cut detail in the mould will prevent separation if the casting is plaster, metal, etc. - but this won't matter if the casting is a one-off and the mould can be broken away without damaging the finished article. To evaluate the crystallization mechanisms of the samples, they were melted at 1300°C and then cooled drastically. These samples were identified as quenched (AQ). Then some of them were heat treated at different temperatures between 600°C and 870°C. All the samples were prepared for the microscopy study by light and electron scanning microscopy. Also, parts of the samples were ground to be analyzed by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and DTA. The thermal conductivity of the liquid slag tends to increase as the SiO 2 content increases. This behaviour can be attributed to a better thermal conduction along the polymer chains. This transport is hindered by the presence of non-bridging oxygen (O -) and cation breakers at the ends of the polymer chains. This interpretation has been experimentally supported by Eriksson et al. [ 13] in a work on liquid slags in the system CaO-Al 2O 3-SiO 2.The break temperature of the samples revealed that sample B (with 6% B 2O 3 and 4% Li 2O) presents a T br = 1071°C and sample D (with 6% B 2O 3) a T br = 1066°C. Both present a good agreement with PC sample in which T br = 1064°C.
