About this deal

We know all this because, while not much happens and the dialogue is all so excruciatingly vague and mannered, Young takes every opportunity to tell us at length what a character is thinking, and she leaves us in no doubt whether she is on their side or not. It's more like the notes for a novel than the finished thing. In 1902, at the age of 22, Young married John Arthur Helton Daniell, a Bristol solicitor, and moved with him to the fashionable neighbourhood of Clifton, Bristol. There she developed an interest in classical and modern philosophy, became a supporter of the women's suffrage movement and started writing novels. She also began a lifelong affair with Ralph Henderson, a schoolteacher and friend of her husband. [3] Part of a curated collection of forgotten works by early to mid-century women writers, the British Library Women Writers series highlights the best middlebrow fiction from the 1910s to the 1960s, offering escapism, popular appeal and plenty of period detail to amuse, surprise and inform. He pitied widows, but he mistrusted them. They knew too much. As free as unmarried women, they were fully armed; this was an unfair advantage, and when it was combined with beauty, an air of well-being, a gaiety which, in a woman over forty had an unsuitable hind of mischief in it, he felt that ...all manhood was insulted ... But he knew how to protect himself." Another highlight will be a collection of poems by 12 contemporary writers responding to the Wallis painting. They will be compiled in a book and read in public.

A bust of Southeywas created in his honour in 1843 and is still on show in the north choir aisleat Bristol Cathedral, where Chatterton’s father was once a chorister. Afive-minute walk away in Millennium Square is also a bronze statue of Chatterton by Lawrence Holofcener. Controversy over who had authored his works followed his death, as few people believed they could be written by someone as young as Chatterton. Eventually, it was accepted that the Rowley poems were his and Romantic poets such as Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats and Shelley would later be influenced by his story and writing. The celebration includes the commissioning of new poems based on the deathbed painting of Chatterton by Henry Wallis, which hangs in Tate Britain, London. A comic book relating his life story is being produced, and a competition will be held to design a new monument to him in Bristol.

Omnipresent as it was, the march toward war is not very pressing in the lives of the residents of Chatterton Square, nor nearly so engrossing as the changes growing up and growing older bring to each of them.

Area Statistics

This is done to preserve the anonymity of the people in that area, as some postcodes cover a very small area, sometimes a single building.

The E. H. Young Prize for Greek Thought was an annual essay prize awarded in her memory at Bristol Grammar School. [3] Bibliography [ edit ] The setting is also interesting: though current events figure prominently, the run-up to World War II is discussed so obliquely that it was a while before I was sure whether it was the summer of 1938 or 1939. This was published in 1947, so it was historical fiction of a recent vintage, and the take on the times is refreshingly different from more recent historical fiction dealing with this period. Andrew Kelly, director of the Bristol Cultural Development Partnership, said one of the main aims of the anniversary celebrations – called A Poetic City – was simply to make sure Bristolians knew about him.
