About this deal

Did you know that the term “acetate” is often – erroneously – used to refer to ANY plastic film or plastic sheet? That’s probably because acetate has been around since before World War I! In truth, acetate is something more specific. Acetate sheets and film are made of a specific type of plastic material called cellulose acetate, which is made from natural sources like wood pulp and cotton. Grafix Acetate is also 100% biodegradable! All of acetate’s main components are produced from natural wood pulp and cotton, rather than fossil fuels. No food-based agriculture is used to make our acetate sheets and film; the wood pulp is sourced from SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative®) managed plantations, which typically plant more trees than are harvested to ensure no endangered hardwoods are used up. Because they come in various sizes and shapes (usually round or square), touch dots can help locate a specific setting on a dial, control, or device. When working on a non-absorbent surface like acetate, coloring mediums act very differently. Many water-based mediums require absorption into the surface for the medium to dry. But acetate isn’t one of these surfaces. Because of this, you need to use a coloring medium that will dry on a non-absorbent surface. The Best (and Worst) Coloring Mediums for Acetate When choosing a medium for coloring on acetate, it’s important to understand the properties of your mediums. Will it work on non-absorbent surfaces? Is the medium water-based or oil based? Understanding the properties of your mediums goes a long way towards getting great results with coloring on acetate. Working on a Non-Absorbent Surface

Properties are based on .005″/115um clear acetate film. Properties of other gauges and finishes can vary. There are many types of lamps: incandescent, halogen, fluorescent, LED, and full spectrum. Try different lamps to see what you prefer. Try to choose a low “Kelvin” rating – under 5,000 Kelvin (K) – so that it does not emit ultraviolet or blue light. Remember that your home’s lighting and reading conditions differ greatly from those in a specially designed low-vision clinic or office.Reading stands can help with both reading and writing by allowing you to position your reading and writing materials more effectively. Using a reading stand when you read or write with a flexible-arm task lamp and your stand magnifier or other optical devices will increase your success dramatically. One type of reading stand You’ll probably have to get used to holding the reading material much closer to your eyes than before. Reading at this very close distance may be uncomfortable at first, but it won’t hurt your eyes or cause your vision problem to become worse. They help you see a wider field of view, or more lines and text at a time because the image is closer to your eye. Because of the slippery surface of the acetate, sometimes the paint pens won’t start flowing easily. If this happens, write on a piece of paper to start the paint pen, and then move to the acetate surface.

It’s also important to realize that it often takes time, patience, practice, and much encouragement and support to successfully learn how to use all low-vision optical and non-optical devices. Family and friends can play an important role in encouraging you to be patient and to keep trying. They can also help you experiment with lighting, including different types and positioning, and to use the devices correctly as you were trained to do with the low vision specialist. Bring the lamp closer to help maximize the light delivered to the task and your eye.

Be careful to position the light so that it does not shine directly into your eye and creates glare. I find that most of the inks, especially the PITT pens and similar, they need a good amount of drying time so that they don’t smudge. I usually leave them for at least 5-10 minutes before seeing if they smudge. Because you are working on a non-absorbent surface, it’s going to take them longer to set up. Try to be patient with yourself when learning to use the prescribed device. Like any other skill, learning to read with a low-vision device requires regular practice over many weeks.I’m sorry to hear that you’re having trouble, that sounds really frustrating. So just to clarify, are you adding ink on one side and color on the other? Or are you adding color and ink to only one side? I just want to make sure I understand before giving you too many recommendations! You may notice some differences at first when you begin to use your low-vision devices at home. It may be different from what you remember it was like during your low vision examination. Many people have this experience and sometimes believe that the doctor or low vision specialist sent them home with the wrong magnifier or reading glasses. Yellow-colored sunglasses are helpful for use indoors (reading, writing, doing handicrafts, using a computer) to reduce glare and enhance contrast. They bring reading and writing materials closer to your eye, thus helping to achieve “relative distance” magnification: enlarging letters and words by bringing them closer.
