There are now more versions of Fluxx out there than any one person could hope to own, but that won’t stop anyone trying! One of the latest versions is for the fans of the Joss Whedon TV series, Firefly. The anniversary release also swaps out the original board game’s standard pieces for some deluxe components, most notably 15 hand-painted resin ship miniatures to represent the vessels flying around the system. That whole damn ‘verse is depicted on a new neoprene mat, with custom ship dice also among the upgrades. Firefly, the popular Fox television series created by Joss Whedon, comes to life in a new boardgame from Gale Force Nine. Compelling characters, great storytelling and an evocative universe have made Firefly a fan favorite for over a decade. Now fans of the television show and board games can agario chart their own course with Firefly: The Game. Firefly: The Game isn’t the first board game based on a TV show we’ve reviewed here on Board Game Quest. A while ago we took a look at the Battlestar Galactica board game (spoiler alert: it’s phenomenal) and were able to state that you don’t have to be a fan of the show to love the board game. Does Firefly fall into the same mold? I’d say yes, but not as strongly.

Fluxx is a simple game at heart; you have a hand of cards, on your turn you draw a new card and play a new card until someone achieves the goal. But, the rules change throughout the game with cards changing the number of cards drawn, played and even held in hand. But the rule changes don’t end there, other rules can be played the turn the game around, upside down and on its head.

Hauling stuff is good, but is it shiny? There’s more than enough tokens in the game, so The Whole Damn Verse playmat, the Shiny Token Set and Big Money Orientation: All items orient to the map with their bottoms to the south and tops to the north. NO SIDEWAYS or UPSIDE-DOWN items. All players should keep their view of the board as if sitting on the south side. Set up your ship card on your ship template in that way also, even if your area is on the north side of the board. No More swinging your POV around the table over and over again. But on the same token, Firefly: The Game is far from a cheap, licensed tie in. While, yes, the Firefly license defiantly helps sell this game, overall Firefly is a well-designed game that’s also a lot of fun. And for me, that’s a sigh of relief. Nothing is worse than getting a game based on a subject matter you enjoy and finding out it’s nothing but a shallow box of cards with no game play to speak of ( World War Z I’m looking at you). Get creative and think of the dream jobs you have always wanted to play with the crew of the Serenity. You can use content from the two expansions Respectable Folk and Wanted Fugitives, as well as everything from the base game of course, to create your ideal job. The ‘verse is a big place and we want you to help fill it! Over the next month we want you to send us your own Jobs for Firefly Adventures: Brigands and Browncoats .Some versions of Fluxx add more unique cards to the mix, Cthulhu Fluxx added the infamous Ungoals where the result was all players lost unless the meta-rule and cultists were in play, along with investigator and doom points which added another level to the game without it bloating. Firefly feels like it could have done something similar and that not having some unique aspect to the game seems like this is just an additional Fluxx game with different pictures and card names which is a shame. Some cards could have had ‘reever points’ or ‘alliance points’ linked to ungoals for example. Token Images/Containers: All new images for tokens. Thanks to Astromags from BGG, for new clearer images.
